Take Care of Yourself
With Thanksgiving on the horizon, Aguilar's reminders to focus on taking care of ourselves this month in Onward are the perfect fit. She states "Gather your people. Surround yourself with those who are doing what you want to do. Often the people you associate with determine the type of person you become. To improve your health, hang out with other healthy people (and
perhaps exercise and eat with them). You need backup, role models, cheerleaders, and friends on this journey. Rally your support systems and make a literal pre-commitment with someone else. If you promise a colleague that you’ll walk after school, that commitment will make you much more likely to follow through" (326.) Over the holidays, reflect on your squad. What are you thankful for? What makes you happy? Take the journey to take care of yourself. You deserve it. Our kids deserve it.

Worthwhile Reading Recommendation of the Week
Our focus on reading leads us to this week's pick from the Heinemann Blog: "What are the Notice and Note Signposts?" The blog post shares insight from authors of Notice & Note: Strategies for Close Reading, Kylene Beers and Bob Probst. The six “signposts,” features that help students better understand any literary text, are described in the blog. The criteria authors developed for determining whether a text feature is prominent enough to stop and teach are also described as follows:
- "It has some characteristic that makes it noticeable, that causes it to stand out from the surrounding text.
- It shows up in a majority of the books teachers frequently teach.
- It offers readers who notice and reflect on it something that helps them better understand their responses to the text, their reading experience, and their interpretation of the text."
The anchor chart seen below is linked directly to the picture for free downloading; copies of the book Notice & Note are available in my office should you care to read more as well. Enjoy!
