Newsletter 10, Week 10 Term 2
Waiau School ⎪ 4th July 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora e te whānau,
Well, the winter bugs have certainly made their presence felt at Waiau School over the past 10 days! Hopefully we are over the worst of it.
This past fortnight has been a very industrious time for our students, Room 2 had their Christchurch camp and Room 1 have been busy being the leaders of our Kura and getting on with the important job of learning. Ask any Room 1 student what a Nebula is - as they have been learning about Space. Lots of fun was had this week when they created their own Nebulas.
More information about camp will follow in our newsletter, however, I just want to mention how proud I was of all of the tamariki that went to camp. Yes, it was not the most ideal time of the year for a camp, but our Waiau Tamariki are made of tough stuff and they handled the frosts and overcast days beautifully. Our accommodation was toasty warm and our food was very tasty.
A huge thank you to Poppy and Liv for stepping up and being Camp Parents, as Clint and Dan were unable to attend due to illness. I learned the true meaning of ‘the show must go on’ last week. It was lovely to receive texts from Cath throughout the first day (I was attending a course) telling me how much fun the tamariki were having. All of the preparation and behind the scenes work goes into organising a camp was well worth it!
As a teacher, camp is a great time to see otherwise quiet students really shine in some challenging situations. Nothing beats a smile from a student once they realise that they have just achieved something they thought they could not do. We were lucky enough to experience quite a few smiles from students that exceeded their own expectations.
This year we have used online bookings for the student led conferences- as this is new for our school, we would appreciate any feedback. As of today 18 families out of 25 have made bookings. Please leave a message or email the office if you would like help to make a booking. We are aiming for 100% turnout.
Keep healthy and we look forward to seeing you at the student led conferences Monday/Tuesday.
Noho ora mai ,
Megan

NZ Playhouse
Last Wednesday morning we had the privilege of being hosts to two groups, Rotherham School and the NZ Playhouse Theatre team.
The heaters were cranked up and the hall prepared (thanks to Hayley, her helpers and Mrs Murdoch). We were all patiently waiting to be transported on a journey with the production of The Emperor’s New Clothes. And what a journey it was…
It is always great for our students to be up close and personal with live theatre and NZ Playhouse put on a superb rendition of the fairytale that was new to many of our tamariki. Room 2 had fun learning about the story prior to the show and were able to integrate their learning with coding and Makey Makeys. They also learned a new drama process called the ‘wall of thought’.
Room 1 has some great activities to follow up with after the show.
The Trail Ride funded this opportunity for our school.
School Assembly/hui will be in the Library (Whare Pukapuka) on Friday 8th of July. All are welcome to attend. Unless otherwise advised, visitors will need to wear a mask as we will be inside. It will be a recap of Term 2 at our amazing Te Kura o Tuatahi o Waiau.
Reading Together Workshop at Amuri Area School
It was pleasing to hear some feedback from one of our Parents. He has participated in the recently held course on how children learn reading, run at Amuri Area School and has commented on how worthwhile it has been. The Reading Together Workshop is run each by Amuri Area School and we appreciate the opportunity for our families to be part of this programme.
Reading together
Would you like the opportunity to spend an hour once a week in Room 1, listening to our superb readers share their stories and reading books with you?
We are looking for some volunteers that could spend an hour a week (or fortnight) in Room 1. You would be an encouraging and keen listener that our children could share their developing reading talents with. Ideally, if we have several people keen to come in, you would organise with Ginny which day suited you, so that we only had one special visitor per day in the class at reading time (Monday-Thursday).
A great opportunity for people in our community that might like to get to know some of our junior superstars and be part of our great wee school. Please let Grandparents and friends know, they may be keen as mustard. The volunteers will work in the room with Ginny and Hayley.
Fish’n’chip Friday/ Mufti Day this week.
We will be taking orders for lunch from Brenda’s on Lyndon. So please bring along your order with correct change in a named envelope on Friday morning.
Students are welcome to wear mufti clothing on Friday.

As we near the middle of the year, it is important to thank some people that work tirelessly (sometimes behind the scenes) to keep our school running.
I would like to acknowledge the mahi of the following people
Pam Murdoch (& relief cleaner Nellie Kriesler) continue to keep our school hygienic and warm.
Amanda Chapman- for her tireless work as our Groundperson/Caretaker (Jack of all trades).
Our Bus drivers, Anne, Danella, Lee and Petrea for safely and reliably transporting our tamariki to and from school.
Our teaching Staff, Ginny, Cath, Jen and Hayley our Learning Assistant, for preparing and delivering engaging learning experiences on a daily basis for our tamariki (as well as undertaking their own professional learning too)
Liv, the lady who holds everything together in our Office
Our Board of Trustees, Annabel, Hamish, Henry, Poppy, Courtney, Cath and Board Secretary Liv. Our Board is made up of a team of busy parents who have taken on the important role of Governance of our school. This year we will have some members finishing their term of 3 years. There will be positions available on our board and we would encourage you to consider standing in the up and coming elections this September. The Board of Trustees is representative of the demographic of our school community and I believe that each one of you have skills that would benefit our board in some way or another. Please consider putting your hand up for the Board elections. I’m sure our current members would only be too pleased to answer any of your questions or wonderings about life as a Board member.
You. Thank you for supporting your child/ren. With your support, Together Everyone Achieves More (TEAM Waiau).
