First Semester in the Science Department
We finished up a great first semester in the science department!
Students in Anatomy & Physiology prototyped and produced adaptive technology using our PRUSA 3D printers. This was a great opportunity for students to apply information they’ve been learning throughout the course. Some community members were happy to test out some of the prototypes! The device pictured will be used by a community member with limited use of their hands to help turn pages of a book. Great work A&P students!
Biology students finished up the semester by applying their knowledge of genetics to their final project. Many students will become parents, so they researched prenatal testing and the role of genetic counselors in the diagnosis of genetic disorders and family planning. Students each chose a genetic disorder to research – many chose disorders that they, or someone they know, has been diagnosed with. This genetics unit allowed students to learn a little more about the ‘why’ of who they are!
Math Changes
Happy 2nd semester from the Evansville High School Math Department! A new development for next year’s ATM (Applied Topics in Math) course is in the works. Unfortunately, ATM is no longer a transcripted credit course with Blackhawk Tech. Students taking ATM next year will see many of the current application problems, but also added in are Algebra 2 concepts to give students a leg up when entering Algebra 2 or post-secondary education the following year. In order to help students be more prepared for the ACT standardized test, we will be incorporating more ACT prep in ATM. This will help expose students to the structure and the type of problems seen on the ACT test. We are very excited about this new vision for ATM.
Spanish Activities for Second Semester
As we start the new semester, the Spanish department is looking forward to a wide array of exciting activities.
Spanish 1 students will learn how to discuss their favorite activities, will barter and shop in a mock market setting, and will research weather and activities in beautiful Spanish speaking countries.
Spanish 2 students will compare similarities and differences between shopping in the US and Spanish-speaking countries, will learn how to interact in a restaurant setting, and will create travel presentations for a Spanish-speaking country.
Spanish 3 students will learn about Latin American cuisine and cook their own authentic dishes to share with the class, will learn about heroes and historical figures in the Spanish speaking world, and will write their own myths to share with Evansville elementary students and students in Nicaragua.
Spanish 4 students will be presenting on historical conflicts in the Spanish-speaking world, investigating art and artists, and learning how to discuss choices and consequences in Spanish.
AP Spanish students will continue practicing speaking, reading, writing, and listening through the exploration of the themes of Personal and Public Identities, Beauty and Aesthetics, and Science and Technology.
Attached pictures- AP Spanish students chose the global challenge they thought to be most important, researched their topic, and presented it to the class.
