Lanoka Harbor School Newsletter

May 2023

Dear Lanoka Families,

We hope that you all had an awesome spring recess and that the time was well spent with family, friends, and those close to you. Now that we are recharged and energized, we will be pushing forward through the remaining portion of the school year. For our third and fourth-grade students, NJSLA Testing will begin on May 1st. Attendance is critical, please make every effort to get your child to school on time. Testing will begin promptly at 8:45 a.m. During the testing window, we encourage all of our students to be well-rested and eat a healthy breakfast in the morning so that they are prepared to do their very best.

Mrs. Kilmurray and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our staff for their outstanding efforts, not just in light of the upcoming Teacher Appreciation Week, but for all that they do throughout the year. We truly feel that we have an outstanding group of teachers, paras, and support staff that make up our team. So… hats off to the LHS Staff and THANK YOU for all you do!

As we continue through this school year, just a reminder that every day is an opportunity for growth, every day is a blessing, and it's always good to enjoy the time together.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Brewer, Principal

Theresa Kilmurray, Supervisor

OCEAN COUNTY MATH LEAGUE CONTEST

On Thursday, April 20, 2023, Lanoka Harbor School’s 4th grade Math Team, 32 students strong, completed the Ocean County Math League contest. The team answer sheets were forwarded to the Ocean County Math League to determine the County winners. Each of the team members should be proud of their perseverance in taking on this challenge. Congratulations, and good luck to our team!

LITERACY NIGHT AT LHS

Literacy Night at Lanoka Harbor Elementary was held on Wednesday, April 26th. This event was held in conjunction with the Book Fair Night, an evening for parents to come with their children to browse and purchase books. The library was filled with brand-new books to purchase and the classrooms were filled with activities planned by the teachers for the children and parents to partake in. Some activities included special guest readers, Campfire Poetry, Reading to the Animals, and photos with Cubby, the Lanoka Harbor School mascot! We would like to take the time and thank the Lanoka Harbor School staff members, Lanoka Harbor School PTO, and the LTEA for the necessary items and time to make this event a success. A great time was had by all in attendance!

EARTH DAY 2023

On April 28th, Lanoka Harbor School celebrated Arbor Day/Earth Day. It was a beautiful day to honor our retirees, Robin Anderson, Meryl Costa, Leah Davies, Eileen Gerding, Karen Martenak, Erin Potter, and Linda Quinn. A tree was dedicated to honor these special staff members during the celebration. The tree will help to remind us of their years of service and the many lives they have touched along the way. A special guest, Smokey the Bear, came to visit and reminded us to protect the forest. The children sang "Smokey the Bear" and performed other songs about this day. The Arbor Day/Earth Day Poster Contest winners were announced and received a certificate and a special surprise! It was a great day for all!

LHS PROUD PAWS

The Lanoka Harbor School Proud Paws Club recently participated in the Lacey Food Bank Kid's Community Garden Project. The students collected gardening supplies such as peat pots, potting soil, vegetable and flower seeds, and garden tools. The goal of this project was to give families a sense of pride and accomplishment by growing something whether to eat or simply for its beauty. Food Bank volunteers came to the school to meet with the students and talk about the project and were given a carload of startup garden supplies to be distributed to the community! Thank you to everyone who donated to this project!
