DODGEBALL!
🎃 HALLOWEEN ON MONDAY 🎃
This year Halloween falls on a Monday and we ask students and staff to please refrain from wearing costumes to school. Our focus during the day is on learning, and we want to minimize distractions as much as possible. With that in mind, we also discourage families from sending in snacks for the class.
As you know we are a nut safe school, which means that in order to ensure safety for ALL students we ask that no peanut/tree nuts or products made with or containing them be sent into school with your child. The reason for a ban on nuts is that nuts are the allergen that may cause a life threatening allergic reaction. Since there is no cure for an allergic reaction, the best way to avoid it is through prevention of exposure. We request this of all our faculty, staff and all students.
We thank you in advance for helping us focus on learning and the safety of our students during the Halloween school day.
GLOWING WITH GRATITUDE
YOU DID IT!! The Get Glowing fundraiser was a GLOWING success! The community worked together to raise $13,266 for our students. The WCS PTA hosts so many educational activities and events that make the school year special, and we are grateful for the tremendous support of our community! Families gathered to have pizza, laugh and socialize on the playground. The evening highlighted by several grade level fun runs and an adult race- each lit by glow sticks, and genuine smiles.
RAISE THE ROOF!
- For meeting (and then surpassing) the PTA's fundraising goal, staff and students were delighted to see Mr. Libby working from the roof of the school on Tuesday! He greeted students as they arrived, called the shots on the kickball game at recess and facilitated dismissal with a megaphone!
Congratulations to the following classrooms who raised the most money on each floor. They will receive their choice of extra recess, extra PE, or a popcorn party:
First Floor Winner: Mrs. Tracy’s 1st grade
Second Floor Winner: Mrs. Keefe’s 3rd grade
Third Floor Winner: Ms. Sinclair’s 8th grade homeroom
- The PTA pumpkin decorating contest came to an end last week and pumpkins were on display during the Fun Run event. Entries were judged and one classroom from each floor was awarded the coveted jack-o-lantern trophy! We are so proud of the cleverness and creativity of all of our students; this was an extremely difficult contest to decide! Congratulations to the following pumpkin artists:
First Floor Winner: Mrs. Pols’ class, "Big Bad Wolf is Good"
Second Floor Winner: Ms. Culley’s class, "Leonard (My Life As A Cat)"
Third Floor Winner: Mr. Huston’s 7th grade homeroom, "Charlie Brown"

GO2 SCIENCE
Through the Go2Science program, students in Kindergarten through 2nd-grade have been learning about the lack of access to clean, drinking water for children at HIP Academy in Kenya. At the conclusion of this 6 week mission, we have decided to try to raise money to help these students and their school. Woolwich Central School will be collecting money for the next 2 weeks at the front door and in classrooms. Our goal is to fill a water bottle in each classroom with pocket change or cash. For more information visit https://thehipafrica.org/what-to-sponsor/ to learn more about how you can help! LINES FROM THE LIBRARY
Students have been incredibly responsible so far this year with returning their library items, however, we all forget sometimes! I have printed our first overdue notices for students who still have books that they checked out a month ago or more. Please check backpacks and homework folders for this small reminder! It would be wonderful to get those books back, and for students to be checking out new material. Remember: fines are not collected for overdue books, just for damaged or lost items.
SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT
- October is Fire Safety Awareness month and this week students in grades Pre-K through 2 were treated to a visit from the Woolwich Fire Department. Real firefighters came to speak with students in the Forum. They answered questions about their jobs, and shared information on fire safety and what to do in the case of a fire emergency. To complete our week of fire safety, the whole school participated in a fire drill on Friday. We are always proud of how seriously our students take these drills. Everyone was quiet and calm while they evacuated the building, and waited for the "All-Clear" from Mr. Libby.
- On Tuesday, the 7th grade took a field trip to the Maine Maritime Museum as part of their series on "Sense of Place." This program is designed to introduce students to their hometown heritage and the varied ways this heritage and history has evolved and changed over time. The interdisciplinary curriculum introduces students to topics in environmental history and ecology, economics and civics, geography, Wabanaki studies, and US History and Globalization. This week one of the highlights was seeing how large whale vertebrae is in real life!
