founding of you colony
it was found in 1633 by George Calvert & lord baltimore and other colonist. king Charles 1 of England wanted the colony to be named after his wife.
agricultural
plantations grew cotton, tobacco, rice, sugar, indigo (purple dye) and other crops.
crops were traded for items that could not be produced on the plantations including shoes, lace, thread, farm tools and dishes.
economy
maryland among the other southern colonies took part in the indentured servant system.
by using the servants to help with farm labor they were able to produce more crops for more money. Maryland also took part in ship building and iron works.
politically
by 1775 Maryland was governed as a proprietary colony.
socially
maryland was formed with the hopes of more religious freedom, especially for catholics.
religious toleration which already existed by charter was further established by a law of the Maryland assembly of april 2, 1649
