Want to Stay Healthy This Winter? Wash Your Hands… not just because of COVID..
If you’re looking to keep your family well this winter, frequent hand washing is a must. According to the CDC, hand washing reduces your risk of catching respiratory illnesses (like colds, flu, bronchitis & COVID) by 21%, and diarrheal illness by 31%, but studies show the public is not washing enough. A 2009 study of hand washing practices showed only 31% of men and 65% of women wash their hands after using a public restroom - yuck!
So when should you wash your hands? The CDC promotes hand washing:
· Before, during, and after preparing food
· Before eating food
· Before and after caring for someone who is sick
· Before and after treating a cut or wound
· After using the toilet
· After blowing nose, coughing, or sneezing
· After touching an animal, or animal waste
· After handling pet food or pet treats
· After touching garbage
How should you wash your hands? The best way is to use soap and water. Wet hands with warm or cold water and apply soap. Rub hands together, and wash palms, backs of hands, between fingers, and under nails. Wash hands for 20 seconds, or hum the “Happy Birthday” song twice. Then, just rinse and dry.
If soap and water are not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers can reduce the number of germs on hands. Make sure your hand sanitizer is at least 60% alcohol for maximum effectiveness.
Hand washing is a healthy habit you can teach even young children. It can reduce time out of school, and money lost on doctor’s visits. So stay healthy-wash your hands!
