ILH Staff at IMPD Community Day!
ILH Staff Inspired by Local Work
Recently ILH staff visited several local maker spaces with First Maker Space. They visited Tech High School and Shortridge High School. They were able to walk away with several ideas for the environment they want to create in their Art/Maker Space special area class. They also attended the Decatur Township Superintendent's Lunch and witnessed the ribbon cutting of their new Innovation Hub. This is a space where students will complete high school capstone projects and teachers can utilize for lessons. The space was fully transparent with glass walls, filled with technology, and provided spaces for students to work alone or with a partner. Notice the picture here with ILH staff trying out the personal working space! This hub also provided a maker space design lab. It is great to see other area educators providing this type of working space for students. ILH hopes to use these experiences to inspire their learning spaces, and they have been actively pursuing several grant opportunities to help make this a reality for students and families!
ILH Attends Many Local Community Events
ILH Staff has been actively attending several Southeast Community Events! They recently attended Art Squared where they helped students make sun catchers. They have been out walking in the Twin Aire Neighborhood each week. They also networked with several community organizations at the Downtown District IMPD Community Day. ILH Founder attended a networking event with the Prospanica group sponsored by Indiana Wesleyan. ILH Head of Curriculum and Instruction attended the Construction Trades Information Fair at the Florence Fay Apartments sponsored by SECS. ILH has enjoyed being out in the community and meeting other community members and families so devoted to the development of the community and great educational options!
This Saturday the school will have a table set-up at the NESCO Hollywood Block Party Event! See the flier below.
Next week Gabe Surface, ILH Head of Curriculum and Instruction will participate in the SECS Chopped event. This will take place October 10 from 6:00-9:00. Entrance is free, but tickets can be purchased to taste and vote for your favorite chef. All funds raised are to support the great programming at SECS. Good luck, Gabe!

Founder Visits New York Schools
Aleicha Ostler, ILH Founder visited several New York schools recently. Among these schools charter, traditional, and private schools were all included. This trip sponsored by The Mind Trust took fellows to Alt School, Brooklyn Prospect, Democracy Charter, Coney Island Prep, North Star Academy, Harlem Prep, South and Bronx Community Charter High School. They also learned more about Transcend Education, a non-profit supporting schools. The focus of this trip was strategy, influence, and mindset. Ostler was able to see how schools function in a very different "high-rise" environment. There were also varied staffing models, SEL support for students, and varied management systems. After this visit ILH staff is thinking deeply about student management systems that create strong culture, safety, and structure yet allow students to be critical thinkers who can make responsible decisions on their own. Staff is also thinking deeply about student uniforms and what is a best fit with the ILH school model and Southeast Indy. Ostler's fellowship with The Mind Trust has allowed her to travel the US in search of the best strategies for creating a model to serve Southeast Indy!
