Toms River High School East

Newsletter - December 20, 2021

Dear Families,

Another productive week at the Home of the Raiders! We are in the midst of our 12 Days of Holiday Spirit! The week was filled with concerts, guest speakers, school growth committee meetings, student workshops, and career fairs. Special thanks to all of our wonderful staff for their efforts to support our children!

I spent the weekend with the family. My older daughter came home a little early as her college covid cases are on the rise. She spent the weekend in isolation and testing to assure she is not bringing anything home. I enjoyed watching the new series of The Witcher on Netflix. The show takes a similar tone to the HBO series, Game of Thrones. I didn't get into Game of Thrones, but am enjoying the storyline of this monster hunter! Give it a try!

I hope you and your family enjoy this holiday season and are thankful for the things you have in this world!

Door Decorating Contest!

Congratulations to Mrs. Rodriguez, Mrs. Marotto, and our Security Officers for placing first, second, and third, respectively, in our highly coveted Door Decorating Contest! Great job too to Dr. Kretz's classroom for being selected as Honorable Mention. I must say, proudly, I won the contest back in 2006 in Room E-23. Shout out to all of my former Period 1 students for all their efforts to be the very best the school has to offer! The victory still stands as one of my greatest accomplishments as a Raider!

Check out TREtoday for pictures of all of our 2021-2022 contestants!

COVID

The latest guidance for schools from the NJDOH includes a change to times related to the 14-day quarantine for those in close contact with COVID-19.

  • 7-day quarantine with testing. Unvaccinated persons can end quarantine after day 7 after receiving a negative COVID-19 test result collected between day 5 and day 7. Quarantine cannot be discontinued earlier than after day 7.
  • 10-day quarantine without testing. Unvaccinated persons can end quarantine after day 10 if they haven’t been tested for COVID-19.

Because this guidance takes effect immediately, it could impact students who are currently in quarantine. If, therefore, you or your child are eligible to return to school next week, Dec. 20-23, based on these new guidelines, please contact your school immediately to inform them of you or your child’s return. Please know this only applies to staff or students in close contact with a confirmed positive case.

All individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 remain at a 10-day quarantine. The district will be working to update information on all of the related material it currently has published on its website in response to this change.

Raider Holiday Spirit!

Raiders Helping Raiders!

Our Mentors and mentees spent time together on Wednesday making hot chocolate Reindeer gifts together. Great job to Mr. Trumble and Mrs. Mason for coordinating the activity!

Career Speakers

Toms Jones, a former High School East graduate and Army First Sergeant, spoke to interested students and staff on Tuesday about the military branches and post-service career opportunities. Mr. Jones is currently the Global Head of Military and Diversity Recruitment at Verizon. Thank you Mr. Jones for taking the time to speak to our kids!

Raiders Excellence!

Great job to Mrs. Gregorek for her efforts to go above and beyond in support of a student in need! Great job to Ms. Bush for writing a min-grant for our students in need. Ms. Bush's work will support our walk-in closet for students to pick up nonperishable goods and personal hygiene products! Thank you too to Mrs. Weinberger for her efforts to bring in various organizations to speak to our kids about career opportunities in various trades.

Thank you Ms. Gregorek, Ms. Bush, and Mrs. Weinberger for your love and dedication to help others, you are proud reflections of our school community!

School Committee Meetings

Our Climate Committee met on Wednesday to discuss out faculty pot luck, book club, Secret Santa, and our Winter Blues staff event in January.

Our College and Career Committee met on Tuesday to solicit staff connections to career speakers. We are looking for former Raiders, community members, and parents to support our goal to promote awareness for life after East. Our next topics include careers in Broadcast Journalism and Massage Therapy. We are in the process of developing a career survey for our students through NJCAN. Our counselors are also going to inquire interest to conduct college talks.

Career Fair

Our College and Career Connection Committee coordinated a career fair on Friday. However, several of our organizations did not attend due to the national Tik Tok safety threat. We will look to reschedule. Special thanks to the Army National Guard, Hand and Stone, Ocean County Vocational School, the Army and Navy, and the Ocean County Achievement Center for their support on Friday.

Spanish Heritage Bulletin Boards!

Our Spanish Heritage Club created several Bulletin Boards in our Media Center promoting Christmas in the Hispanic community! Great job!

Staff Book Club!

Members of our staff convened this week and chatted about two of this years “best seller” books. Various staff members brought in food and drinks that relate the culture of the books. The experience was enjoyable as staff shared their thoughts and made connections. Great job to Mrs. Tammi Pagano for organizing the Book Club!

Building School-Home Relationships!

I sent out Part (a) of a three part survey last week and I believe the survey did not work. I have fixed it and will now provide the updated version in this newsletter. I've include all three portions and I hope you will have a few minutes to complete the survey so that we can learn more about how we can better support you in the home. PLEASE NOTE that this information will be kept strictly confidential.
