Digital Newsletter for Chehalem Elementary School
December 2018
The year is going by so quickly and December has snuck up on us! This year, students attend all the way through Friday, December 21st and return on Monday, January 7th for the holiday break. There is lots of learning to be done between now and then, with children learning about different holiday traditions from around the world, in addition to our rigorous academic curriculum.
Because we know attendance is so important for student outcomes, please do your best to schedule your travels during the winter break, and not leave early or return late. With our attendance campaign in full swing, we are seeing a dramatic reduction in the number of students arriving late to school. We went from a high of 60 students arriving late in September, to an average of low 20’s now. Second grade is leading the pack with 96.4% daily attendance. Thank you for all your efforts to get students here on time and ready to learn every day.
We are very appreciative that we have several local churches donating gifts or food baskets for families in need over the holiday. 60% of our Chehalem families live in poverty and struggle to make ends meet. We are so very thankful for these community resources that help our families.
The School District also has social workers who can help connect families with outside resources. The worker assigned to our school is Sara Doig. If you would like to connect with this free resource, please connect with Kaci Schmitt at kaci_schmitt@beaverton.k12.or.us or 503-356-2064 and she can put in a referral for Sara to contact you.
Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday season filled with joy and relaxation.

Early Release Wednesdays
What do teachers do with that 90 minutes? On the First Wednesday of every month the entire school staff comes together for building level professional development with a focus on social-emotional learning.
Remaining Wednesdays of every month are devoted to teaching teams to work together on grade level specific or program specific professional development through teacher collaboration. Teacher collaboration is an ongoing process of small teams of educators working together to know each student’s strengths and challenges, and to meet students’ specific learning needs, while strengthening the teacher’s own teaching practices. Collaboration time gives these teams a more comprehensive view of each child’s academic progress and results in greater achievement, individual student growth and personal success.
Stay Healthy this Cold & Flu Season
Cold and flu season has already begun, but there are things you can do to keep yourself and your children healthier. Prevention measures include washing your hands frequently, getting lots of rest, drinking plenty of fluids, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Home is the best place for a child who is ill. The Too Sick for School informational flyer has guidelines to help you make the decision about when to keep your child home from school.
Option School Application Process for 2019-2010
For fifth grade students and parents:
The application timeline has changed for the 2019-2020 school year. The lottery application phase has been shortened to make Second Consideration applications available earlier. This will allow students more time to work on their applications and schools more time to review them.
The Beaverton School District is nationally recognized for high student achievement and innovative programs. Beaverton students in grades 6-12 have the opportunity to investigate learning options that best fit their academic needs. Students can choose their neighborhood school or apply for one of a number of learning options. Transportation is provided.
Applications for the 2019-2020 school year will be available starting Monday, October 15, 2018. Please plan to attend one or more of the open houses that are available. Students may only select one option on their application, so do some early investigation of the options online.
All applicants must reside within the Beaverton School District boundaries. Beginning October 15, current Beaverton School District students are able to apply online using their student ID. Resident students not currently attending a Beaverton school, or who do not have Internet access, will need to complete a paper application available online, or at any school office beginning October 15, 2018. Please give careful consideration to your choice of school. Once an application has been submitted, no changes will be allowed.
Applications must be received no later than Friday, December 7, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. (PST).

School Board Resolution on Improving Attendance
The Beaverton School Board believes that regular student attendance is essential for ensuring our students are on-track to learn and succeed. We know students who routinely attend school are more likely to achieve academic success, graduate from high school, and be prepared for college and career.
On average, chronically absent students miss two or more days a month—the equivalent of 10 percent or more of the school year. Chronic absence is a leading, early warning indicator of academic trouble and later dropout. Children from low-income communities are more likely to face systemic barriers to getting to school and, starting as early as prekindergarten, have higher levels of absence. Improving attendance is essential to ensuring more equitable outcomes.
Beginning in 2012 attendance has been tracked for all schools and student groups and is a key element in the District Strategic Plan. The Beaverton School Board supports a data-driven approach to attendance improvement. Data helps us determine where absenteeism is most concentrated (by school, grade, ethnicity, geography, income, etc.) and allows us to identify the causes of absenteeism. Through a strong analysis of attendance data, educators and administrators can identify barriers to attendance and provide students with targeted support.
The Beaverton School Board believes everyone has a role to play in ensuring that Beaverton students understand the importance of regular attendance. We encourage parents and family members to monitor student absences and have pro-active conversations about the importance of attendance. Trusting relationships—whether with teachers, mentors, coaches, or other caring adults—are critical to encouraging students to pay attention to multiple absences and to seek help to overcome barriers to attendance.
The Beaverton School Board acknowledges that improving attendance is critical to student success. As a whole community of students, parents, family members, mentors, coaches, educators, and administrators, we can set the expectation that attendance matters, every day.
