The Dragon's Tale
The Biweekly Newsletter of the Kaohsiung American School
2020-2021, Issue #9: December 14
Dear KAS Community,
As we finish this first semester, and also finish 2020, we’d like to reflect on our journey together as a Dragon community this year. 2020 has unarguably been one of the most difficult years of a lifetime. At the same time, KAS students have accomplished many great things.
For example, this semester our Dragon varsity basketball team ended a rival team's multi-year winning streak. This semester, over 32 KAS students completed internships in diverse placements like the Weiwuying National Kaohsiung Center for Arts, the Southern Taiwan Association of Implant Dentistry, and Jiu Zhen Nan Pastries through their efforts in the KAS Future Leaders Program. This semester our students learned and grew together through co-hosting the South Taiwan Model United Nations, which was one of the only in-person Model United Nations events to take place globally this semester. And finally, for the first time in KAS history, we have our first legacy student. Please see below in our Alumni Corner for more details.
Even during this time of limited global travel, in just this semester, admissions officers from almost 100 universities have met personally with KAS students via video conference. In these meetings the university admissions officers could both get to know our KAS students better, and help answer students’ questions about the application process. Already in December some members of the Class of 2021 are starting to receive good news about the Early Action and Early Decision applications, and there will certainly be more good news in the months ahead.
We feel grateful that, in many ways, we have eluded some of the grimmest outcomes of COVID-19. After becoming the first school in Taiwan to switch to remote learning in January, we also became the first school in Taiwan to resume in-person learning in February. Since that time, KAS students have experienced more in-person learning days in 2020 than students in most other schools in the world. This became reality for us due to the hard work and cooperation of each member of the KAS school community, in partnership together with Taiwan’s excellent management of COVID-19.
At the same time, even to this day, we remain cautious. We share some collective anxiety about the unknown. We continue to worry about friends and family across the globe. In some tragic cases we have even faced significant losses. Indeed, this has been a year of contradictions, where we have experienced the good and the bad at the same time, over and over again.
As we look forward to 2021, we see a brighter future filled with even better opportunities for students. After what we’ve overcome in 2020, we know that students and the entire KAS school community are ready for any challenge. We wish each of you an excellent winter break, and look forward to starting our second semester on Monday, January 11, 2021.
Sincerely,

Alumni Corner
This year, KAS alumna Ms. Jade Huang (Class of 2004) enrolled her daughter Amber in KAS PK. This is especially exciting because Amber is now the first legacy student ever to enroll at KAS. A legacy student is a student who is a child of an alumni. We know that more legacy students will enroll soon, and with Amber joining KAS PK, it is the beginning of a new era.
Jade came to KAS early in high school and stayed through graduation. The school changed much during Jade’s time, and has changed even more since then. When she first came to KAS, the school was located on the campus of Fudong Elementary School in Lingya District. During Jade’s senior year 2003-04, KAS moved to its current location at the former site of Sheng Li Elementary school. At the time KAS was much smaller - Jade remembers her senior class having about 15 students. Jade expressed how much both the campus and the overall school structure have changed since then.
After Jade graduated from KAS she moved back to Melbourne, Australia, where she completed her degrees in marketing. Due to an agreement with her siblings, she came back to Kaohsiung eight years ago. She planned to stay for two years then return to Australia, but instead got married and chose to stay in Kaohsiung much longer!
Jade knew that KAS was the priority school for her daughter Amber. Jade says that Amber really likes Pre-K at KAS. She comes home happy every day, and each evening she talks about wanting to go back to school the next day.
We are so happy to have Amber join our KAS family, we are thrilled that Jade is a lifelong Dragon, and we are excited that Jade chose KAS for her own children. We often say, once a Dragon, always a Dragon!

IB Bits
IB Projects
Essential elements of all IB Programs are projects. The Middle Years Programs culminates with the Personal Project, completed in grade 10, and the Diploma Program requires students to complete an Extended Essay. Projects are important to IB, and teach important independent work skills important to success in university and beyond.
All students at KAS begin a Personal Project in grade 9 and finish it in grade 10. They select a topic in which they are interested that has a connection to one of IB’s global contexts: identities and relationships, orientation in time and space, personal and cultural expression, scientific and technical innovation, globalization and sustainability, or fairness and development. The global context ensures the connection of the project to something bigger than the student’s own smaller world. The student researches the topic and considers a project that can be created with the knowledge they have gained, that can impact others. Students research, plan, meet with their advisors, and then finally complete the projects. A project might be a website, an architectural model, a book, a movie, a robot - projects our students have created are too many to list. Then they write a report on the entire process, focussing on what they have learned. During the months necessary to complete the project, students must learn how to document, how to plan, how to take action to meet goals, and how to meet the challenges that inevitably will arise. This year’s grade 10 students will display their Personal Projects on January 20, 2021.
All students wishing to earn the IB Diploma will begin their Extended Essay in December of their junior year. This 4,000 maximum research paper on a topic of the student’s choice is a major benefit to being an IB Diploma student when one considers how important it is to prepare our students for researching and writing in college. If a student chooses a topic about which he or she has passion, the Extended Essay can also provide a rich topic for college essay personal topics and college interviews.
12th grade parents: IB Diploma students have a strict and hard due date for their Extended Essays. After having been led through the process by their CORE teacher, having met with their personal advisors, and after having submitted drafts for feedback, their FINAL version is due the day we return from break: January 11th. Students who do not submit their EE that morning will be using the school day to finish the paper. I find that students who do not meet this deadline struggle in the very demanding final semester of the IB DP program, with Internal Assessments due in most classes, mock exams in early March, final delivery and review of two years of content, and then IB exams which begin April 29th. We also want our seniors to find time to enjoy their senior year. Parents, please encourage your seniors to finish and submit these final projects before they return to school in January.
