Teenagers can increase portion sizes where needed to supply additional energy and nutrients. Snacks count for one-fourth of a teen's total daily calorie intake. Therefore nutritious snacks are especially important. Fresh fruits and vegetables, low fat cheese and yogurt, and sandwiches make great snacks. Cookies made with whole wheat flour, oatmeal, raisins, or nuts add nutrients and satisfy the desire for sweets.

Overweight and obesity are common among teens just lie children. Unlike children though, teens can make the decision making skills needed to manage their weight. They can learn to make healthful food choices and include physical activity.
