What's Happening, Patriots?
Mrs. Wroblewski's Third Grade
Every week Mrs. Wroblewski's 3rd grade class helps our kindergarten buddies learn. The friendships that have formed are amazing!
Here the 3rd graders are helping their friends determine which numbers are bigger.
Everyone looks forward to our weekly meeting to help our kindergarten friends.
Learning from the 3rd grade kids is always fun and exciting.
Miss Davis' First Grade
Discovering non-fiction books
First graders studied big non-fiction books on the first day of our non-fiction reading unit! They asked themselves the question “where in the book did I learn something?” as we have talked about how non-fiction books teach us something.
This group compared their hand size to animal hands as they were reading a book all about animal hands and feet.
This group is noting that they are learning about how plants grow by placing a sticky note on that page.

Lesson 3: Mistakes are Okay!
Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your child will learn that mistakes are a natural part of the learning process. They’ll practice encouraging their classmates (and themselves) while the class learns and practices a skill together: snapping their fingers.
Try This at Home:
Remind your child that everyone makes mistakes and those mistakes help us learn. Point out when you make mistakes or tell them a story about a time you learned something from making a mistake.
Grade 1
Lesson 3: You Did It!
Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your child will learn that a distraction is something that takes their attention away from something else. They’ll learn different ways to manage distractions, such as reminding themselves to focus, turning away from the distraction, changing places, or politely asking someone to stop a distracting behavior.
Try This at Home:
When you need to pay attention or focus on a task at home, ask your child to suggest some ways you can manage distractions.
Grade 2
Lesson 2: What Mistakes Tell Us
Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your child will learn that mistakes tell us something is not working and they can respond to mistakes by asking for help, trying again, or making a small change to keep going.
Try This at Home:
Ask your child what a mistake tells them and what they can do to keep going after a mistake.
Grade 3
Lesson 4: Planning for Practice
Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your child will work with a partner to make a practice plan that includes what they want to learn, how they will practice, and what they can do if they aren’t improving.
Try This at Home:
Ask your child to tell you what a practice plan includes.
Grade 4
Lesson 2: Mindful Awareness
Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your child will compare mindful behavior and unmindful behavior and identify the parts of the brain responsible for controlling each type
Try This at Home:
Ask your child what it means to use mindful (reflective and purposeful) vs what it means to use unmindful behavior (reflexive and unaware.) Have your child identify the areas of the brain associated with controlling each type (Mindful – pre frontal cortex and Unmindful – amygdala)

Vision Screenings
Vision screenings for 1st and 3rd graders have been scheduled.
Vision screening is required by the Indiana State Board of Health for all 1st and 3rd graders. All 3rd graders will be screened on November 8th. The 1st graders will be screened November 22nd. Near and far vision will be screened, the results are pass or fail. This is only a screening to determine if further evaluation is needed. Parents will be notified only if your student does not pass the screening. If your child wears glasses, please make sure they have them at school the day of the screening for accurate results.
If you have any questions or would like to decline the screening, please contact our school nurse Jenny (Jleonard@hse.k12.in.us).

A New Book is up at the Book Walk!
Come for a walk in our Outdoor Learning Lab with your family and neighbors. You can take a walk while you enjoy a book. Bring your phone to scan the QR codes and listen to our students read the story aloud to you.
No Lunch Visitors
We know that many of our families have enjoyed the opportunity to eat lunch with their child(ren). However, due to safety and space limitations in some of our schools, district administration has made the difficult decision to keep our student lunches closed to all outside guests at this time.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and encourage you to look for other opportunities to engage with your child(ren), their class, and our schools. There are many ways to get involved! If you have any questions or concerns, contact Jimmie Lake, Chief Operations Officer, at 317-594-4100 or jlake@hse.k12.in.us
Dear HSE Staff, Students, and Families,
This Holiday Season, HSE is asking you to give a gift to the Earth by making the choice to be more sustainable. HSE Schools will be hosting a district wide Holiday Light Recycling Program. Starting December 5st and going until January 13th each school will be collecting old, broken, tangled, or unwanted holiday lights. Technology Recyclers will take these unwanted/unusable lights and break them down into useable components that will be used to make new products.
- This will be the third year for the holiday light recycling program!
- During the 2020/2021 season you helped collected and recycle 3,519 pounds of holiday lights!
- During the 2021/2022 season you helped collect and recycle 4,711 pounds of holiday lights.
- In two years of recycling holiday lights, you have helped recycle the equivalent weight of a Ford F250.
- Your small choices have helped prevent a total of 8,230 pounds of plastic, metal, and glass from ending up in a landfill.
- You helped make a HUGE impact.
- What can we collect in the 2022/2023 season?
I am asking that each school set up a collection center (large box, crate, trash can) and collect unwanted/unusable holiday lights in a central location in your building (front office, media center, science classroom, environment/eco club). You can help prevent e-waste from ending up in the dumpster this year. Please share this information with your families and help promote the event.
Why Should People Recycle Old Holiday Lights?
- Holiday Lights are not bio-degradable and will spend hundreds of years in a landfill if thrown away.
- Holiday lights are known to get into waterways and oceans. This can lead to animals becoming entangled and dying.
- New ENERGY STAR LED holiday lights are up to 75% more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs.
- LED holiday lights are not as fragile as the thin glass of incandescent bulbs.
- According to the National Fire Protection Association switching to LED holiday lights reduces the chance of Christmas tree fires.
- LED bulbs offer more colors and features while reducing the energy consumed.
- LED holiday lights have a longer lifespan than incandescent bulbs offering on average 25% longer life.
- Holiday lights are made from copper, glass, and plastic—valuable materials that can be recycled, reclaimed, and turned into new products helping preserve our environment!
Why should you recycle unwanted or unusable Holiday lights? Because you care about the environment! If you want to keep your lights from going to a landfill and do your part to look after the Earth, recycling your lights is a great way to do it!
No matter what the reason, resist the urge to throw old holiday lights in the trash. Please participate in HSE district wide Holiday Light Recycling Program this year!
PLEASE DO NOT:
- Please do not include any packing material.
- Please do not include any apparatus used to wind up or store the lights.
- Please do not include lights wrapped in garland.
PLEASE DO:
- Please place your lights in the recycling box (many will be stored in the front office, media centers, or science classrooms).
- Ask your friends, neighbors, social groups, and family members if they also have lights that need to be recycled.
- Do your part to be more sustainable this year.
