Negley Mission Statement
Ahoy Navigator Parents!
What a great week at Negley! Please take time to read the newsletter so you don't miss out on a thing that happened or will happen here at the BEST school in Hays CISD!
As you know, I like to be transparent with our families when we are seeing things happen with our students that is a new experience for us, or when we see trends. I would like your help in two areas of growing concern - students using curse words casually, and students using words of a sexual nature. Both of these are usually what we see in 5th grade and sometimes 4th, and it's usually just a few students.
Cursing is now being heard in students as young a Kindergarten. We have let our students know that cursing is not appropriate at school and there will be consequences if there is no improvement after warnings. We want our students to use their words, but not those words. The more your child uses these words and becomes comfortable with them, the more chances they will "slip" out at school. Thank you for helping us with this.
The second area of concern are words of a sexual nature. Elementary students are not develpmentally prepared to understand these types of things. Most students, when asked where they heard or saw such things will state they saw it on Youtube or Tik Toc, or Snapchat. Their parents many times thought their child did not have access to these apps but somehow did access. Sometimes it's an older sibling, sometimes it's at a friend's house. Sometimes, it's merely flipping channels on tv and seeing adult content.
Our children are being bombarded with all sorts of things they are not ready to handle. Please make sure that parental control filters are on! Please don't allow them to go to bed with their phone, ipad, computer, tv, etc. Students are not getting the rest they need because they are on a device. And they are finiding ways to access inappropriate material that you aren't even aware of! I'm not asking you to question your child if they've heard such things, because they may not have and we don't want to introduce them because we ask! However, encouraging them to come to you if they hear things at school they don't know or understand is perfect.
If your child is involved in these behaviors, you will be contacted by one of the administrators and we will discuss consequences. If your child reports to their teacher they've heard something inappropriate, the teacher can handle it in the moment, instead of waiting until the next day for it to be addressed. Encouraging your child to report to their teacher is a great way for them to learn to self advocate.
We work super hard for our students to feel safe at school and to teach our students how to act in the real world. We need your help and your child needs to know your expectations for things they can and cannot say. Working together is the best way to ensure all children grow up to be respectful leaders.
Have a wonderful weekend!

90% Attendance Rule
While we understand and are empathetic to circumstances out of your control, there are attendance laws that all schools must follow.
In addition to compulsory attendance law, districts are required to enforce the 90 percent rule, which states that students in grades K-12 must attend class for 90 percent of the time it is offered to receive credit or a final grade. The 90 percent rule applies to most absences, including excused absences. If the student doesn’t meet this requirement, an attendance committee may grant the student credit or a final grade, depending on the circumstances.
FUN THINGS HAPPEN AT SCHOOL!
READING PASSAGES AND MATH GAMES FOR THE WEEK! (updated weekly)
READING PASSAGES FOR THIS WEEK: New Passages Every Week!
One way you can practice fluency with your child is the adult reads the text first and models fluent reading with appropriate phrasing and expression for the text. Then the student reads the same text to the adult while the adult provides assistance and encouragement. The student continues to reread the text until the reading shows signs of fluency (words are read correctly, reading is fairly smooth, the reader uses punctuation to guide pauses and voice inflections). This usually takes three to four readings.
Math activity: https://frugalfun4boys.com/math-facts-baseball-game/
Try this one out! You can make the game board out of anything - an old box or just a piece of paper!
OR
Using playing cards, play WAR with your child. You can decide which operation you want to use - addition, subtraction, multiplication, division. Each person chooses 2 cards. You've decided this game of war will be using addition. Each player adds the 2 cards. Once they have their answer, the dealer says, "1,2,3,WAR" and you both put your cards down. Have your child decide who the winner is - that is the person with the highest answer.
You can even add siblings to this game - it doesn't have to be just 2 people. The person with the most cards wins. OR to make it harder - everyone adds up their points after all cards are used. The person with the most points wins the game!
Once you teach the game to your child(ren) it's an easy one for them to play together while you are making dinner!
Math Fluency:
The biggest thing students need to develop fact fluency is consistent, frequent opportunities to practice. The more students practice their facts, the more quickly they transfer from short-term to long-term memory.
NEW Math Fact Fluency - District Resources
You can print the activities at each grade level, or play some online games! Students will be working with these games in class as well. The videos are very helpful, so be sure to watch those. You will notice that Kinder and 5th are not included. That doesn't mean you can't work on some of the game strategies. Kinder - take a look at some of the skills and introduce them to your child. As for 5th graders - they ALWAYS need practice with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division - have them work on those electronic games and time them!
HAVE FUN AND CELEBRATE YOUR CHILD GETTING BETTER AND FASTER IN READING AND MATH!

Library Update
We are starting a new reading incentive program for the Spring Semester next week for our 1st and 2nd grade students. They have a genre challenge! Look for the salmon colored paper coming home in their folders soon. Students look at all the genres on the front of their challenge sheet and select a book from one of the genres. They read the book and then put an X over that genre on the front and on the back log that book's title, genre and rating. Once they have read 20 books on their genre challenge, they return their form to the library for a small prize and an invitation to their very own makerspace day that only challenge winners get to attend! We have bins for all these genres in the library and can help your student find a book to match any genre. They are able to come before school or during open check out times during school to switch out books as often as needed. I can't wait to see all their great reading this semester!
Third, Fourth and Fifth grade students who read 5 bluebonnets books before February 4th can vote in the statewide competition to decide which bluebonnet book gets the award. 3rd - 5th grade students who read 10 bluebonnet books by the end of April will get to attend our amazing Bluebonnet Party. Students receive credit for bluebonnet books, when they fill out the google form for that book. Here is the link for the google form. They will need to be signed into their school Gmail account to access it but can certainly access it from home as well.
Don't forget that Schlitterbahn reading logs are due back February 10th. If you have lost your form, you can print one out here.
AUTHOR VISIT - WITH A CONNECTION TO NES
I am super excited to announce that we have an amazing author visit scheduled for 3rd - 5th graders on February 21st. Author Adriana Cuevas is coming to our school. So far, she has authored three middle grade chapter books. One of her chapter books has won the Pura Belpre award which is a national award for a Latina/o writer who writes a book that positively represents Latino culture. The award is a big deal! Her son was a former student at Negley, Soren Henderson who is now a freshman.
She will give a 30 minute presentation to each grade level in the library. I am going to read the first chapter of Total Eclipse of Nestor Lopez to all 3rd - 5th grade classes before her visit. I have ordered 2 hard copies of each of her books for the library and have ordered 5 paperback copies of Total Eclipse of Nestor Lopez (the award winning book).
If you purchase a copy of any of her books from the following QR codes, your student will have the opportunity to have their book signed by Ms. Cuevas. These books will be delivered to your home and we will have students bring them to school before her visit to get them signed. What a great opportunity! Please consider supporting our author visit by purchasing one of her books so your student will have an extra special connection to the event!
I will have more information coming soon!

House News
On Friday we had our House Huddles! Students met with their buddy class and talked about goal setting and accountability as the character traits for the next month. They watched the short video
“One Words” for Kids by John Gordonand wrote their "one word" on an index card and then illustrated it. These will be posted on the House Boards in the hallways.
Our House Assembly will be January 27 where we will have a TEAM theme. Students can wear their favorite team shirt - Pros, College, High school, or maybe a local team they are on! Have your child start thinking about what they want to wear!
How about a new House Shirt!
Has your child lost their House Shirt? Do YOU need a house shirt (it's cool for parents to have a house shirt too!) we can help! Remember, every Friday is House Shirt/Spirit Day. Here is the link to make those purchases if you need to throughout the year.

ART:
Hello From The Art Room!
Almost all of the K-4th Graders have seen their Art on the Walls! (5th grader's will see theirs next month)! We have a few more groups seeing them next week.
Thank you all for your understanding and patience as we get this new portfolio system up and running for over 1000 students. If you've Volunteered, you've helped me in so many ways!!
I'm so excited that our 1000 faces Negley are almost all up on the walls with QR codes!! They definitely make our students feel seen and celebrated as artists.
Students with Photo Restrictions have private accounts automatically. You can change privacy settings on your child's account.
Many students have shared that they would like to add more art to their portfolios over the weekend!
First download the Artsonia App.
And here is video directions for adding Art:
(sorry about the volume inconsistency)
The School access code to type in is: PTWJ-WWTZ
Also, one of my Favorite things about Artsonia is, as an Aunt, I can see my niblings art. Here's a video highlighting some cool things you can do in your guardian role:
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Between Artsonia and the Boosterthon we have now raised enough money for the Art Room to Supply:
My First Goal: Every Student to get to make a Family Gift for the WInter Break!
My Second Goal: EVERY student (who is present on clay days in the Spring) to make something out of CLAY!! (My budget originally only had enough for 3rd-5th).
Thank you all for helping me create exciting Art Experiences for these students!
Much Love, Ms. Kromer
