Riverside STEM Academy
mid February, 2019
What's happening?
Students are continuing to produce interesting projects, improve their writing, and analyze their independent reading books. This quarter, students are transitioning from informative writing to argumentative writing. They will also have the opportunity to engage in debates and evaluate other arguments. Students will have even more options to learn and challenge themselves in the form of book study groups, a virtual field trip, and competitions. Finally, as spring draws near, parent-teacher conferences and 2019-2020 course registration are right around the corner.

Competitions
It is important to us that our students have continued opportunities to challenge themselves as learners. At the start of second semester students began working with a “bucket list” of options to enhance their learning. To continue challenging students this month, we will offer the following possibilities for students to take on:
-3M Annual Challenge - A unique learning opportunity that allows students to meet other science superheroes and work with 3M mentors to turn their ideas into reality.
-NASA Research Challenge -featuring Adobe Spark, involving three separate “mission” choices.Camp Invention is Coming Back to Watertown!
In partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame, Watertown Unified School District is offering the nationally-acclaimed Camp Invention program to children entering grades one through six. It’s an exciting, weeklong summer adventure with lessons that explore connections between science, technology, engineering and innovation. Children will work together to seek solutions to real-world problems and sharpen critical 21st century learning skills while rotating through several fascinating modules. Camp Invention will run Monday, July 22nd through Friday, July 26th at Lincoln STEM Elementary School with Alexandra Agar-Pratt continuing to serve as Director of the program.
We are looking for middle school students going into 7th, 8th, and 9th grade to serve as Leaders-In-Training (LITs) at Camp! These individuals work closely with teachers and leadership interns to take on leadership roles and responsibilities. Click on this link for more information about the LIT program https://www.invent.org/programs/leaders-in-training.
