Towson, MD – The contributions African Americans have made – and continue to make -- to American history and culture will be celebrated throughout Black History Month (February) by the students and staff of Baltimore County Public Schools.

Across the county, individual schools are welcoming guest speakers, sharing information during morning announcements, hosting door decorating contests, creating musical programs, showing Black films, writing reports, reading biographies, offering special assemblies, and more.

“BCPS celebrates Black history year-round; however, the month of February affords us a special opportunity to explore and elevate some of the people and stories that are sometimes overlooked,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Darryl L. Williams. “Black history is an integral part of American history, and I encourage all students and families to spend time this month learning more about Black history and the diversity and strength of Black culture.”

Alumni spotlights

Every school day during February, BCPS will spotlight a Black BCPS graduate on social media.

Black Excellence

The Black Excellence Program is an extracurricular BCPS activity that teaches students about the people, places, and events that have been important throughout the Black experience in America. The program has three key components during the 2022–2023 school year: a book study, a school-based competition, and the development of presentations. Schools and students may participate in one, two, or all three components of the program.

Schools participating this year are Baltimore Highlands, Berkshire, Carney, Cedarmere, Chatsworth, Dundalk, Glyndon, Harford Hills, Joppa View, Mars Estates, Milbrook, Rodgers Forge, Rossville, Stoneleigh, Warren, Westchester, Westowne, West Towson, Winfield, and Woodbridge elementary schools, and Catonsville, Cockeysville, Deep Creek, Deer Park, Franklin, Golden Ring, Loch Raven Technical Academy, Parkville, and Perry Hall middle schools.

The program will conclude with a systemwide public event at Loch Raven High School on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. The event will showcase presentations students developed in response to the books they read or the 2022-2023 independent research prompt: “Breaking Barriers and Innovation: How have others created the world I live in today?”

Black History Month Writing Contest

The BCPS Offices of English Language Arts and Social Studies are co-sponsoring the annual Black History Month writing contest. A winner will be selected in each of the following grade level bands: Grades K-2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12. Prizes for winners will be provided by The Education Foundation of BCPS.

Students are asked to write in response to the following quotation from Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman to serve as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice: "Our children are telling me that they see now, more than ever, that, here in America, anything is possible." Students are asked to write about an African American activist, artist, athlete, author, musician, scientist, or other public figure who has helped them see that anything is possible.

All entries must be submitted by Friday, Feb. 10. Only four entries will be accepted from each school. More information is available in an online flyer. Students are encouraged to ask their English language arts and social studies teachers for additional information.

“SOLE Defined”

More than 800 BCPS middle and high school students will see special private performances by the Washington, D.C.-based SOLE Defined dance company. The performances for BCPS students will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 7, and Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the Gordon Center for Performing Arts. This activity is part of a month-long celebration of Black Dance in America hosted by the Gordon Center in collaboration with the Baltimore Black Dance Collective, Baltimore County Public Schools, and local dance artists. Trivia Tuesdays

At 3 p.m. every Tuesday in February, BCPS will post Black History Month trivia questions on Instagram Stories (@teambcps). Stories will be live for 24 hours and will be archived in BCPS Instagram highlights.

Highlights of school-based activities

At Campfield Early Learning Center, library lessons throughout the month will focus on Black History Month. In addition, students will participate in a virtual field trip.

Chadwick Elementary School will welcome local author Kenji Jackson on Monday, Feb. 13, from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. and participate virtually in the Arts for Learning Maryland’s “Blacktastic” program on Thursday, Feb. 23, from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Glyndon Elementary School will host a multicultural fair on Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 6 – 7 p.m.

Hebbville Elementary School will present its schoolwide Annual Black History Month Celebration on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m.

To celebrate Black History Month at Lansdowne Middle School, students will view slideshows and videos during their homerooms and keep notes in a Black History Month booklet. Later in the month, students will use homeroom time to research and create a one-pager about a person or event assigned to their class. The one-pagers will be assembled to create a timeline quilt.

At Reisterstown Elementary School, students will write their dreams on a cut-out of their hands and create a schoolwide display.

Each week during Black History Month will have a special theme at Rodgers Forge Elementary School. Week 1 will be “Kickoff to Black History Month”; Week 2: “Spotlight on Ruby Bridges”; Week 3: “Spotlight on Jackie Robinson”; and Week 4: “Research and Writing about a Famous Black American.” Among the school’s other activities, each day the school will highlight a different Black leader.

Westchester Elementary School will create a display about famous African Americans and their contributions to history. Across grade levels activities, students will read biographies and auto-biographies, share information about Black athletes, and read and respond to Martin Luther King’s “I Have Dream” speech.

West Towson Elementary School will present a Black History Month Assembly on Thursday, Feb. 16, at 1:30 p.m.

The 2023 BCPS Stakeholder Climate Survey is open now through Friday, March 3. Team BCPS students in Grades 3-12, parents/caregivers, staff, and community members are invited to participate in the school system’s annual Stakeholder Climate Survey.

The survey is available in multiple languages for students, parents, and community members. This annual survey is an important way for us to listen to you, the BCPS community, learn your views, and be responsive to your feedback by taking action to improve our schools and school system. Survey feedback is used by our schools to refine School Progress Plans as well as by the system to measure progress toward goals in The Compass strategic plan.

The views of respondents will help to shape our budget, our staffing, and our programs. We hope all members of Team BCPS will participate in this important annual survey, we want to hear from you!

2022-2023 Racial Justice Poetry Contest accepting entries

Entries are being accepted now through 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 1. Students in Grades 6 – 12 in Baltimore County public, parochial, and independent schools and homeschooled children in Baltimore County can apply. Poems must be original and no more than three pages long. Contest details, prize information, and a submission form can be found on Schoology in the resource folder for teachers of Secondary English Language Arts. "Stop The Bleed" Training

Black Excellence Program Closing Event

As a community school we work with a lot of community partners to provide our students/families and communities with resources and other assets. This month we would like to highlight community partner, Reverend Jeff Simpson. He is the Reverend at Lansdowne Alliance Church and is an active partner with our school. Several times a year he donates cold brew coffee to our outstanding educators. He also volunteers at our annual Special Area Day and often lends us his tents for outdoor activities such as these. His church has also donated backpacks and coats to students in need over the years. He is an active member at our community school listening sessions and is always willing to go the extra mile for our students and community.

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) is providing local school systems with the option to repurpose inclement weather days as virtual school days. The BCPS draft plan was presented to the Board of Education on October 11 and then submitted to MSDE for approval. MSDE approved BCPS' plan on November 10.

These virtual instruction days will count towards the minimum required days of instruction under Maryland law. The Virtual Inclement Weather Day Plan applies to the 2022-2023 school year only.

In-person camp to be held July 3 – 14 for students entering Grades 3 -12

Towson, MD – Registration is now open for the 2023 BCPS Summer Art Enrichment Camp.

Students interested in visual arts will find opportunities to build skills, continue their training, add to their portfolios, and meet new friends. The Summer Art Enrichment Camp will be held from Monday, July 3, through Friday, July 14, from 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at Perry Hall High School, 4601 Ebenezer Rd., Baltimore 21136. The camp will be closed on Tuesday, July 4, for Independence Day. An open house/reception will be held in the evening on Thursday, July 13, to give students, families, and teachers an opportunity to see the artwork created during camp. The cost of the program is $120 per student. Each participant will receive a portfolio for safekeeping their artwork.

Students entering Grades 3-5 will participate in “An Exploration of Artists and Their Materials.” In this studio focus area, students will explore a theme through painting, drawing, and 3-dimensional materials as they learn about various artists.

“An Investigation of Media & Technique: Portfolio Development” is the studio focus area for students entering Grades 6 – 8. This focus area is geared toward students interested in developing portfolios for consideration for magnet art programs. Students will work from direct observation and imagination as they build a portfolio of work that provides a record of the progression of their ideas, skills, and images.

For students entering Grades 9-12, the studio focus area is “Painting & Drawing from Observation: Portfolio Development.” This focus area is geared toward students who are interested in pursuing the sequential art program at the high school level and those who are preparing portfolios for Advanced Placement or college entrance. It allows students to survey their own artistic development to choose an area of concentration that will further their personal artistic growth.

Priority admission for the camp is given to current BCPS students as well as children of BCPS employees.

Transportation to and from camp locations will be provided at no additional charge to students who do not reside near the camp location.

Payment Assistance

Families experiencing financial hardship can request financial assistance for camp by contacting the Office of Visual Arts at 443-809-4030, or by email to rtwentey@bcps.org or lwilliamson2@bcps.org.

Waivers are available for qualified students who do not have permanent and adequate housing. Families in that situation should contact their school principal to ask for a waiver and a copy of the “Homeless Children and Youth in Baltimore County Public Schools” brochure.

*Students need to stay in their car until the parent stops at one of the arrival cones. The arrival cones are red, orange, yellow, green and blue. Staff will help assist students exiting the vehicle.

*Students walking in the parking lot must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

*The front row of the parking lot is for staff and handicap parking only. All other parents or guardians are asked to park in the other open spaces in the parking lot.

*When walking from the parking lot to the school we ask that students and parents/guardians use the crosswalk.

Dismissal Traffic Reminders:

*If a change will be made to a dismissal procedure, please send in a note with your child or write a note in your child’s agenda.

*Car riders need their parents to come to a complete stop at one of the dismissal cones (red, orange, yellow, green and blue cones) for students to enter the vehicle. Please do not signal your child to come to your car prior to coming to a complete stop at one of our arrival cones.

*Parents are asked to stay in their vehicle while in the car loop. Staff will help assist students into the vehicle.

*To ensure everyone’s safety, vehicles are prohibited from passing while in the loop and parking lot.

*The bus loop in the front of the school is for buses and after school vans only. Please use the parking lot to park your vehicle or remain in the line if your child is a car rider.

Beginning today, August 22, 2022, parents/guardians and students will now see transportation information in FOCUS. To access student transportation information under a parent/guardian sign-on in FOCUS, users should select “Child Info” under the student’s name on left side of the FOCUS window. Once “Child Info” is selected, users should select, “Transportation.” Within “Transportation,” users will see the Bus Number, Bus Route Name, Stop Description, and Stop Time for both the morning (AM) and afternoon (PM) trips. Please email Transportation_ContactUs@bcps.org or call 443-809-4321 with questions or concerns regarding school bus service.

Apartir de hoy, el 22 de agosto, los estudiante y sus famlias podrán consultar la infromación del transporte escolar en Focus. Si usted entra a Focus con su cuenta de padre o tutor, busque en el menú “Información del estudiante” bajo la columna del nombre del estudiante al lado izquierdo. Media vez haya hecho clic en “información del estudiante”, haga clic en “users” (usiuarios), luego en trasnportation (trasnporte,) alli verá al lado derecho el número de autobús, el nombre de la ruta, descripción de la parada y horario de llegada y de regreso.

The Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) is a meal service program and is a provision of The Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act. It allows us to serve breakfast and lunch, at no cost, to students and eliminates the requirement for the Free and Reduced Meal Application. LES is approved for this program for the next two years. Since our school is operating under the CEP program, all students receive their meals free of charge and will not complete meal applications.

La Provisión de Elegibilidad Comunitaria (CEP) es un programa de servicio de comidas y es una disposición de la Ley de Niños Saludables y Sin Hambre. Nos permite servir desayuno y almuerzo, sin costo alguno, a los estudiantes y elimina el requisito de la Solicitud de Comidas Gratis oa Precio Reducido.
