Skills for Life….Character Traits in Action
Literacy and math instruction are the cornerstones in any elementary program, especially in a K-2 building. However, when you put over 500 students together, conflict is bound to arise from time to time. To help promote positive interactions in school, our Positive Behavior Coach, Mrs. Sims, teaches children using a curriculum called Second Steps. Beginning later this month, she will present a weekly lesson to the first and second grade classes. The first unit teaches children about listening to learn, focusing attention, following directions, self-talk for learning, and being assertive. These are called the “Skills for Learning.” We like to think of them as “Skills for Life.” These skills promote success beyond the classroom. Mrs. Netherton will begin presenting the lessons to the kindergarteners as well in the next few weeks. Future units teach skills about self-regulation, emotion management, and problem solving.
Another way we build positive character at Winfield is through our Student of the Month program. Each month students focus on a character trait– for September the trait is CARING. Teachers will select one student each month who exemplifies the trait in school. That student and his/her parents are honored at a breakfast. At the breakfast, we share a story, donuts, awards, and pictures! Our first breakfast is September 28th. I can’t wait to see which student has been nominated from each class!
Here are some ways to promote CARING at home:
- One way to teach children how to care is by having a pet or interacting with a friend’s pet. For young children, learning to be gentle and caring are important values. Older kids can learn how to play with a pet and recognize the cues of “come closer” or “give me some space.”
- Whenever your child notices that someone is upset and wants to help, encourage him to act on that impulse. Afterward, talk about how proud you are of your child for caring.
- Find a meaningful way for your family to volunteer to help others. For example, serve soup at a food shelf. Deliver a meal to an elderly acquaintance who lives alone. Visit people in the hospital or a nursing home.
- When you see news stories about natural disasters or tragedies, get your family together and ask what you can do to help. Maybe you can purchase water and deliver it to a drop-off collection center, or you could assist a local organization in a relief effort.

I am very excited to host our first annual Welcome to Winfield Elementary Luncheon! Our new first and second grade students will be invited to join me for lunch one day next week. BG Gators has graciously volunteered to donate an extra-large cheese pizza for all four of our luncheons. I look forward to getting you know your child better and introducing them to peers that can relate to being the “new kid.” If this is the first year for your first or second grader at Winfield Elementary, please look in your child’s folder for their invitation this weekend.
From the Home-School Facilitator, Mrs. Mucha
Last week, I introduced three regions of the brain. First up, is the hippocampus. The hippocampus is the region of the brain that stores our memories and past experiences. It is like a first defense filter. Our brain is given a signal representing the experience of smell, sight, sound, texture, etc. The hippocampus does a “google search” in our memories to see if we have any feeling or experience associated with that signal. For example, we smell a certain perfume it can bring up instant feelings from the hippocampus “google search” of memories. These feelings can be good or bad depending on the memory that is connected with that smell. From there it sends the signal to the amygdala. The amygdala will take over from there to “decide do we like this?” or do we “need to protect ourselves”. Next week, learn about the amygdala!
From Our School Nurse, Mrs. Taylor
All immunization records, physicals, and dental reports are required on the first day of school. If you have not sent your child's records, please do so as soon as possible. Indiana requires all students have completed their required immunizations by the 20th day of school or they may be excluded from school until the information is provided. Students with incomplete vaccination records will be excluded from school beginning 9-18-17.
