Makerspace: Where the Magic Happens
It is really great to see the kids get right into planning their projects as soon as they decide what exactly they want to make.
By now our students understand how to use our STEM bins that are in the Makerspace room. They pick their materials, put them in the tray, and take them back to their seats, then.... the magic begins. Sometimes, they work together - collaboration and teamwork happen naturally, you don't have to push it. As a teacher, I am around to help when asked or needed.
This is a great time to observe the students. I can easily see their progress. For instance, if at the beginning of the year a child used just three details to make an airplane, then he/she chooses more than seven recycled items now.
Makerspace is an excellent place for kids to explore, create, and invent with a variety of supplies, tools, and recycling items. All these hands-on projects ignite curiosity, creativity, and most importantly, critical thinking in our future architects, engineers, scientists, artists, or maybe Makerspace teachers.

MSA Virtual Visit, 3 February
On 3 February, we will be hosting a virtual visit from an MSA accreditation team. They have our self-study report with hundreds of pages of supporting evidence and we’ve had a brief introduction meeting with the team leader. In their half-day Zoom visit, they want to hear from all groups involved in the school community, so they’ll be meeting with teachers, admin, students, parents, and staff. We will also be stepping into as many classrooms as we can for a few minutes to give them a sense of what happens at school. We’re looking forward to having the chance to show off what a great community we have here at BIS and to get the team’s feedback on areas where we can improve. We will share the results of the visit when we receive the team’s report.
Cafeteria Lunch Survey for Parents
The survey is for all parents! Even if your child doesn't buy lunch, we'd like your input. The children will take a separate survey.
Distance Learning Plans
- If a full class is out due to a COVID case in the class, then the students will have live lessons with the teachers for two weeks.
- Elementary will meet on Zoom and submit work via Seesaw.
- Middle and Secondary will meet on Teams, get their assignments and submit work on Teams
Individual Student Quarantine:
- When a student is out due to a COVID exposure off-campus or on the bus they should follow the procedure below:
- Elementary students will get their assignments on Seesaw and meet with their teachers at times set by teachers and parents.
- Middle and Secondary students must log on to Teams daily for their assignments and can set up meetings with their teachers on Teams.
- Middle and Secondary students should also check their emails and respond to their teachers DAILY.
Let's work together to try to help our students keep up even if they are on distance learning! Teachers are posting work and lessons throughout the day, please have your child check in every period if possible!
