Welcome back to another exciting edition of the Springbrook Weekly Digest! I hope this issue finds you well and ready to learn about the great happenings occurring in our school community. Here's a glimpse of the acknowledgments and upcoming events for the week.
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
We continue to celebrate the impactful contributions of Black Americans. This week, we examine the accomplishments of a fellow Marylander that is taking the gymnast world by storm.

WIDA ACCESS
WIDA testing is occurring for students receiving ELD services and will continue through February. WIDA provides information regarding EML students' linguistic growth.

We Celebrate the Vast Contributions of Black Americans
Khoi Young, Maryland Native Looks Ahead to 2024 Paris Olympics
This month, we recognize Khoi Young, male gymnast. Young began his tumbling career at the Sports and Learning Complex in Prince George's County, Maryland. He graduated from Bowie High School before heading to Stanford University as an engineering major concentrating in product design.
Young was a bronze medal-winning team member at the 2023 World Championships. He is the 2023 Pan American champion on pommel horse. As a member of the United States men's national gymnastics team, Young has his sights set on the upcoming Paris Olympics.
Springbrook Students Featured at 9th Annual Poetry Read-In
Tiffany Egwin and Vynou Philogene, both Springbrook HS students, will be featured in the 9th Annual ACT-SO Poetry Read-In on Sunday, February 11, 2024, at the BlackRock Center for the Arts, 2901 Town Commons Dr, Germantown, MD 20874, 3:00 PM; doors open at 2:40 PM.
Springbrook is the only high school to have two student poets featured!
Congratulations to Our Published Blue Devil
Junior Leah Willis' poem was selected as a Topical Winner for the American High School Poets - In Like a Lion 2023 anthology. Find Leah's introspective poem in the American High School Poets available on Amazon.com Feb 20, 2024.
Work Based Learning Summer 2024 Registration is Open for Rising Grades 11 and 12
Dental Assistant Apprenticeship Opportunity
Juniors interested in becoming a dental assistant should attend the virtual meeting on Feb. 15, 2024, from 6:00 - 7:00 PM. See the flyer for more details.
Interested in Technology or Business? Consider Applying to Genesys Works
Genesys Works applications are LIVE. Please apply before the March 24 deadline. It's one of THE BEST programs that we offer. You must be available for 8 weeks in the summer for training and then have room for a Triple Period internship during your school year.
What is Genesys Works?
Genesys Works provides opportunities for students to work in paid internships at major corporations, receive industry-recognized certifications, and help with college, scholarship,
and financial aid during their senior year of high school.
What are the benefits of participating?
• It's an opportunity to gain professional and business technology skills while earning college credit. Students learn skills like public speaking, Microsoft Office, business technology, teamwork, and more – all while having fun!
• It's a paid corporate internship in Information Technology or Business Operations.
Students will work for 12 months at a top company like AT&T, Accenture, and Apple FCU!
Who are we looking for?
We are seeking students interested in having a successful professional career and want to be exposed to a business environment before starting college. While our internships are technology and business-focused, we do not require any prior knowledge of technology or business.

Springbrook's Wrestling Team Advances to Region Semifinals!
Congratulations to coaches Rob Wendel and Jensen Lorea and our #4 wrestling team on defeating #1 Parkville #2 Perry Hall to win the 4A North Region Championship! Our Blue Devils now advance to the state semifinals where they face Whitman on February 10, 2024 at North Point High School. #LetsMakeItHappen-BlueDevils!
Springbrook High School Winter Drumline
Springbrook High School's Winter Drumline travelled to White Oak Middle School on Thursday to perform as part of WOMS's Black History Month Celebration. Blue Devils performed for 8th graders in the gymnasium before marching around the building to perform their cadences for the 6th and 7th graders. The drumline was joined by fraternity steppers from Howard University for their performance. They were led by Drum Major Keyla Noriega Ovando, who is a White Oak alumna!
Springbrook's Library Media Center Highlights the Feb 11 - Feb 17, BOTW
Kings of B'more
Seniors had their fourth in-person FAFSA/MSFAA help session. Financial Aid Specialist from Montgomery College and the Office of Education Opportunity Center(EOC) helped Springbrook seniors with the FSA-ID, FAFSA, MSFAA, Scholarships and Montgomery College Free online applications.
Military recruiters also shared scholarship opportunities with seniors. Juniors visited their College Career Readiness table receiving information the 16th Annual MCPS HBCU College Fair, Junior College Fair, Scholarships, SAT preparation for the MCPS March 19th Test.
9th and 10th graders also were invited to their College Career Readiness table to receive information on Scholarships, College Tours, Resume and more.

The Year of the Dragon Begins with the New Moon this Weekend
This weekend, billions of people across Asia and around the world will celebrate the Lunar New Year holiday. Also known as Spring Festival or Chinese New Year, Lunar New Year is based on the complex and ancient Chinese lunisolar calendar, which combines the cycle of the moon and the Earth's orbit around the sun. Each new year in the calendar is assigned an animal based upon the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. The new moon on Feb 9, 2024, will usher in the Year of the Dragon.
QuestBridge 2024 College Prep Scholars Program Application Opens
The application for the QuestBridge application is open until March 20, 2024. The QuestBridge National College Match can be your pathway to a top college. Through this college and scholarship application process, you can apply for free to the nation's best colleges and be considered for early admission and a full four-year scholarship, worth over $200,000.
The Match Scholarship is offered as part of a generous financial aid package provided by the college that covers the cost of attendance, including:
- Tuition and fees
- Housing and food
- Books and supplies
- Travel and expenses
- Have NO parental contribution
- Have NO student loans
Family Forum On Mental Health & Substance Use Prevention at the Brook
A Family Forum at Springbrook High School will take place on Sat., Feb. 24, 2024 from 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM. The forum will focus on Mental Health and Substance Use Prevention. Light breakfast will be provided and SSL hours will be given for students that attend. There will be numerous vendors, presenters and FREE Narcan training and distribution.
