Also, if you have examples of how you track and manage small group instruction, please put a few copies on the table in the workroom. This seemed like a valuable idea at our meeting.

Structural Items
Whiteboards - Thank you for your info. I will keep you updated, but am already moving quickly.
Countdowns - For those of you new to Lakeview, we do not post any sort of countdowns to break in places where kids can see. Why? Because we all know that as we get closer to a break, behaviors can spike. Nobody wants to trigger those behaviors even sooner with a countdown. What is the real secret as we get closer to a break? Consistency! If we treat it like any other school day, it will be. For older students, I always suggest that you schedule an assessment on the last day to promote the feeling of importance.
IEP's At-a-Glance - We are getting these documents to people that do not have regular access to entire IEPs and need to know about the goals, positive strategies, and behavior plans that exist in these documents. Our amazing special ed staff requests that you talk with them personally about any student concerns.
"Buddy Classrooms" - This is a topic that was clarified last year when I came to Lakeview and has come up recently again. If a student needs a place to calm him/herself, then a buddy classroom (a pre-arranged strategy where a student goes to another teacher's classroom) is an acceptable option. A buddy classroom is (1) not a regularly scheduled place where a student goes and it is (2) not a place where a student would spend more than 10 minutes calming him/herself before returning to your room. A buddy classroom is an almost-emergency-type strategy that is offered as a last resort to de-escalate a student. Please see me if you have any questions.
Energy savings - Here's a celebration: Lakeview has the highest "cost avoidance percentage" of the six schools. Thanks for really watching energy consumption and shutting down before weekends and breaks. You probably don't realize that every Monday morning, I find a note on my desk about how we did with our weekend shutdown - they're always perfect. That's money saved that can be put into instruction.
Family newsletters - There will be a family newsletter every week for the rest of the school year, including Dec 13 and 20. Your update for Dec 20 might be a very simple "Happy holidays" with a few pictures and a reminder to read over break. Thanksgiving week was the only week without a newsletter. THANK YOU for your weekly newsletters. Our consistent communication makes a difference and it is noticed by families!
