Hello Sunset Park Families! We are so proud of how everyone handled our week of full virtual learning in order for the safety of our students and staff to be upheld. We know this creates challenging circumstances for everyone and we want nothing more than to be in front of your children face to face teaching them. While we are back in our school building now, we don’t know what the future holds for us, therefore we want to continue to prepare and support everyone with virtual learning as much as possible.
During our own time of reflection and observations, we have identified areas that we would like to improve on and modify if the situation presents itself again. Below are a few links that can be very useful to families as we continue navigating through virtual learning. If you have any helpful feedback for us to consider, please share that with us as well.

Guidance
Your child will be participating in an abuse prevention curriculum during classroom guidance over the next few weeks. Some of the topics your child will learn about are: body boundaries, respecting themselves and others, listening to their Guiding Voice and telling a trusted adult when a situation makes them feel confused or uncomfortable. If you have any questions about the curriculum, please feel free to contact me.
Also, I would like to have another virtual Career Day this year; date TBA. For this event, we are inviting parents, community members and professionals from various fields to virtually record and share their careers with our students. If you are interested and/or know someone who may be interested in participating in this event, please contact me to express your interest and learn more about our upcoming event.
Additionally, we have jackets, coats, gloves and hats available for any students in need. If your child could benefit from these services, please contact me on my office phone at (803) 981- 1272 for further assistance.
Lastly, parents of student council members; you should have received an email from me with the dates that we will meet monthly. If you did not receive this email, please check your clutter/ junk mail or contact me for further help.
As always, please know that I am available should you wish to speak with me regarding your child’s needs at Sunset Park. Have a Fabulous February!

Music Notes
I hope everyone has kicked off the New Year with a great start! All is well on this end – I am grateful for new opportunities and new mercies every day. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, we are able to step back and reinvent ways to live our lives and still make great things happen! With that being said, I would like to present to our 4th & 5th grade students, “The Stars at Sunset Chorus - VIRTUAL Edition.” If you love to sing and make great music with others, this opportunity may be for YOU!! Students who are interested will audition for the chance to participate in this elite group of singers! Everything will be done virtually. More detailed information will follow soon - be on the look-out. Until next time, everyone take care!!!

Library
The month of February offers some unique observances and celebrations that are also invitations to read something new and challenging. The most notable the observances or celebrations during the month are Black History Month, Valentine’s Day and President’s Day.
To observe Black History Month check out some of the Coretta Scott King Book (CSK) Award books. This award is given annually to an African American author and/or illustrator whose work exemplifies the life, principles and work of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It also honors Dr. King’s wife, the late Coretta Scott King for her work to continue his legacy. The history and complete listing of the winners and honorees can be found at http://www.ala.org/rt/emiert/cskbookawards/about. Other helpful websites for reading and teaching are Scholastic, Inc. https://shop.scholastic.com/teachers/teaching-tools/book-lists/29-books-for-black-history-month-.html/. Reading Rockets https://www.readingrockets.org/booklists/favorite-books-black-history-month has a list of informative and inspiring books for children about the African American experience.
Observe Valentine’s Day February 14th by reading and sharing or re-reading a favorite picture book that you fell in love with or special book about friendship.
The last reading challenge is President’s Day. January 20th marked the inauguration of our 46th president, which means there is a long list of interesting presidents past and present to learn about.
Students can "Place a Hold" on library books using the DESTINY online catalog available on their Launchpad.
