Literacy Lowdown
Maureen Hayes, PreK-6 Humanities Supervisor
October 2018
This month's focus: More on Culturally Responsive Literature
Have you taken a look at your classroom collection lately to make sure your books offer a variety of respresentations that are free from stereotypes and biases?
As you are planning lessons, take a look at the mentor texts and stories you choose to share with your students.
The wheel below illustrates the diversity you should be aware of and reading to your students (as developmentally appropriate).
Just a few examples:
Are all of the teachers you read about female?
Are books about athletes centered around a male character?
Are all grandparents portrayed as old and gray-haired?
Do you read books that highlight disabilites and differences?
Are cultures properly represented and not steroetyped?
Check out the resources I have shared with you below.
Let me know how I can support you with this.
New for 2018: 19 Children’s Books To Read In Honor Of Hispanic Heritage Month- Time to make room on those bookshelves!
