Rye Neck Middle School
June 2, 2023 - Issue 17
Dear Rye Neck Families,
We hope this message finds you well as we approach the end of another successful academic year. On Thursday, the fifth graders had a unique opportunity to join the sixth graders in a special preview of the middle school production of The Lion King, Jr. This collaboration gave our fifth graders a glimpse into the amazing world of middle school performances and fostered a sense of community and excitement as they prepare for their own transition next year. We are confident that this experience was both educational and inspiring for our young performers.
In other news, our eighth graders recently had the pleasure of participating in a vibrant and energetic dance event. Thank you to the PTSA, Booster Club and Alumni Association for sponsoring the event. Our eighth graders are also preparing for their transition to high school. They have been taking part in exit interviews, where they have the opportunity to reflect on their middle school experience and share their thoughts and insights. This valuable feedback will help us continue to improve and enhance our educational programs, ensuring that future students have the best possible experience.
As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to remember that our students are not only involved in extracurricular activities but are also diligently preparing for their upcoming exams, including finals and regents. We encourage parents to continue supporting their children in their academic pursuits by providing a nurturing environment for studying. The culmination of the school year is an important time for our students as they reflect on their progress and make plans for the future.
Thank you for being a part of our school community. We look forward to celebrating the accomplishments of our students and bidding farewell to the academic year in the upcoming weeks.
Best regards,
Dr. Dulce Barker

Traffic and Parking Reminders
A reminder for parent, student, and staff drivers:
Our MS/HS parking lot, driveways, and Hornidge Rd. can become congested at times. Typical drivers may be in a hurry with other places to go, appointments to make, and get annoyed at others who either don’t pay attention or hinder progress. Please keep these tips in mind for everyone’s safety, particularly the children who may be less careful, less aware, or who exercise the degree of judgment that comes with their age level:
Avoid cutting people off-- it leads to rapid and poor decision making, and it can generate road rage.
Adhere to stop and speed limit signs, and give people using crosswalks the right of way.
Take turns at merges, stop signs, and intersections to give everyone a chance to enter and exit.
Drive slowly and defensively. The 10 mph campus speed limit is slow, but slow is better than unsafe.
Assume walkers and bikers are not paying attention to you. Although walkers and bikers should follow road rules, assume that they will not do the safe thing.
Be aware that there are other drivers in other cars: don’t block driving lanes or intersections, move for those exiting parking spots, and load/unload students quickly in designated areas.
Traffic in the “temporary” gravel parking lot on Hornidge is one-way. Students should not be dropped off in the lot. Additionally, pedestrian traffic is not permitted in this lot. You cannot walk through as a shortcut.

6th Grade Art - Ms. Appel
6th Grade English - Ms. Castaldo, Ms. Offner & Mr. Macli
We are currently finishing up The Lightning Thief. Students are also working with the article, "The Hero's Journey”, and are aligning Percy's journey to the archetype of “The Hero's Journey.” Ask them to share their findings with you. June is here! The 6th grade ELA final exam is scheduled for June 13, 2023. Look for a study guide in early June. Please remind your child to use their study guide as they prepare for the exam.
7th Grade English B - Mr. Macli
These will be a busy couple of weeks for us! We'll continue reading Warriors Don't Cry and examining the true qualities of someone we would call a hero. We'll also be preparing for our final, which will be based only on our reading of Warriors this month. The ELA final this year is June 13th. Students should continue reading the independent books that they chose from the library last month.
