Thanks-for-Reading Lunch Invitation & Volunteer Opportunity
On Wed, November 14, Claxton will be hosting our annual Thanks-for-Reading Lunch. This event includes a Thanksgiving lunch and opportunity to visit your child's classroom to learn about their reading activities this year. If you'll be joining us for lunch, please send the event RSVP form back to Claxton by 11/9 to let us know to prepare a meal for you! Meals are $5 and can only be paid for at the door.
If you could share an hour or two before or after your lunch visit to help out with our welcome table or support the book fair, please sign up at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0b4aaaa922abf58-book
1) We're looking for volunteers to staff our sign in tables in Claxton's lobby for hour-long slots between 10am and 1pm. Volunteers will help parents sign in, hand out name tags and help families find their way to students' classrooms.
2) Claxton will be hosting a one-day book fair with Firestorm Bookstore during school hours on Nov 14. Firestorm Bookstore will have staff present, but we're also looking for a few volunteers to help us in having a successful book fair!
Girls on the Run Spring 2019 & Volunteer Coach Opportunity
We hope to offer a Girls on the Run program again at Claxton in Spring 2019! We're looking for parents and community members who are interested in learning more about serving as volunteer coaches for our session. You don't need to be a runner to be a coach! If you'd like to learn more, visit https://www.gotrwnc.org/coach or contact Claxton's Volunteer Coordinator at miriam.scott@acsgmail.net.
Description of the GOTR Program--
Over a period of 10 weeks, girls participate in an after-school program like no other. Designed to allow every girl to recognize her inner strength, the Girls on the Run curriculum inspires girls to define their lives on their own terms. Throughout the season, the girls make new friends, build their confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique.
The Girls on the Run lessons encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. Participants explore and discuss their own beliefs around experiences and challenges girls face at this age. They also develop important strategies and skills to help them navigate life experiences. We start with helping the girls get a better understanding of who they are and what’s important to them. Then, we look at the importance of team work and healthy relationships. And, finally, the girls explore how they can positively connect with and shape the world.
Physical activity is woven into our program to inspire an appreciation of fitness and to build habits that lead to a lifetime of health. At the end of each three month session, the girls participate in a Girls on the Run 5K event. This celebratory, non-competitive event is the culminating experience of the curriculum. Completing the 5K gives the girls a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishment as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. Crossing the finish line is a defining moment when the girls realize that even the seemingly impossible IS possible.
Serving as a Volunteer in the Classroom or as a Field Trip Chaperone This Year
Also, if you haven't already done so, you'll need to attend a Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so go ahead and make plans to attend one of these brief (~20 min) trainings. Please see below for the schedule.
All trainings are held at the Central Office of Asheville City Schools at 85 Mountain Street. No registration is required to attend the training.
