Message from Dr. Kaminski
I am always slightly in disbelief when I look up and the first semester has come to an end. I am sure, as parents, you take notice to this warp speed that occurs with your young learners in the elementary setting. Regardless, this day marks the end of our first half of the 2017-2018 school year.
As of today our NWEA mid-year assessments have been completed for both math and reading. Scores will come to you via district email AFTER the Winter Break due to further testing in upper grades that needs to be completed. When you get those results, please feel free to contact your teacher about any questions you may have. Remember, we will take these same assessments at the end of year to monitor student growth in both content areas.
The second semester will bring further testing for several groups of students. The Kindergarten and 2nd grade students will take the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test™) assessment, while 3rd grade takes IREAD (Indiana Reading Evaluation And Determination), and 3rd and 4th complete ISTEP (Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress). We will keep you dialed into the specific dates and times of these testing windows.
I am excited to see and hear about the tremendous service projects happening throughout our school and appreciate our room parents, who have joined in to support some of the larger end of semester projects that are occurring. Mayor Fadness has expressed his support for the kindergarten Aggressively Organic project and had planned to join us today but, unfortunately, was unable to make it due to scheduling conflicts .
Below you will see a pretty cool picture of a class who happened to look outside and discover a real life provocation that led to tremendous thinking, curiosity, and inquiry. I happened to be in the art room and the students were over the top excited about an Eagle who had landed. I was skeptical of their notion, but to my surprise the big bird, not sure it what it actually was, was right at the window and eating a snack he had caught in the field. This is a great example of how our BSE Bears are learning to be inquisitive, thoughtful, and curious about all aspects of their lives. This moment provides proof that they enjoy such opportunity in their learning.
I wish each of you and your family a wonderful holiday. Please be safe, be kind, and enjoy your wonderful children.
Dr. Kaminski

Library Volunteers Needed
Good afternoon!
The Brooks School Library is in need of more parent volunteers* to check in and shelve books. Over 65K circulations occurred through the BSE library last year. That is a lot of books requiring check-in and shelving.
Mrs. Kussy, BSE's Librarian/Media Specialist, will be hosting an informational meeting and training for all guardians interested in volunteering in the library. The meeting will be Friday, January 5th from 10:30 -11:00 AM in the BSE library. Please attend if interested and thank you for being a part of the reading lives of children.
Thank you!
** Volunteers must have a current SafeVisitor Background Check on file. If you are unsure of your status, please contact Marabeth Pereira at mpereira@hse.k12.in.us and she'll be happy to research for you.

Pacers Night - Take 2!
We’re looking forward to having families, teachers, and community partners from Brooks School Elementary fill seats in the spring when the Pacers host the Toronto Raptors on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at 7:00 PM. We also have three great alternate games in case your families can’t make it to your school night:
· Friday, March 9th vs. Atlanta Hawks (7 PM)
· Sunday, March 25th vs. Miami Heat (5 PM)
· Tuesday, April 10th vs. Charlotte Hornets (7 PM)
Fundraiser Program Brochures went home this week. We’ve heard Pacers tickets make great Christmas gifts!
We’re also excited about the new online purchase option this year! You’ll see on your brochures that people will have the choice to purchase their tickets through the brochure or online – whatever is more convenient for them. If you’d like to order your tickets online for any of the three games, go to www.pacersgroups.com/raptors.
Check out this fun video from Victor Oladipo! The deadline for everyone to turn in their brochures is Wednesday, February 07, 2018 and we look forward to seeing you at our games in the spring! GO PACERS!
