Connotation & Denotation
The dictionary definition for a word; its literal meaning.
Denotation
Feelings or ideas that the word suggests.
Point of View
Referring to himself or herself or to a group including himself or herself.
Second Person
Referring to the one or ones to whom he or she is speaking.
Third Person Limited
Method of storytelling where the narrator knows only the thoughts & feelings of a SINGLE character.
Third Person Omniscient
Method of storytelling in which the narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of ALL of the characters in the story.
Simile & Metaphor
Describing something using like or as.
Metaphor
Describing something NOT using like or as.
Types of Poetry
A musical rhythm, and their topics often explore romantic feelings or other strong emotions.
Epic
A long, narrative poem that is usually about heroic deeds and events that are significant to the culture of the poet.
Narrative
A form of poetry that tells a story.
More Terms
An assertion that is held to be true by most people but not backed up with facts.
Opinion
A view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.
Fact
Something that actually exists; reality; truth.
