March 5-9
A Note from Ms. Marshall
Please look for a permission slip this week for our Oklahoma City Museum of Art field trip. Every child must have a signed permission slip turned in, in order to attend the field trip!
This Friday night is Family Fun Night at Monroe. Please join us for dinner, fun games, specials treats, and awesome raffles. Some of the raffles this year include: Nintendo Switch, a signed football from Baker Mayfield, Beats headphones, FitBit, electric scooter, and many more. We hope to see you there!
A note from Ms. Kirk:
Greetings Monroe Families! It is that time again... testing time! I am beginning the process of looking for Test Monitors. It is not a hard job and does not have to be a big time commitment at all! All you have to do is attend test monitor training and pick which days you would like to be a monitor.
Tests Monitor Slots (can pick one or more!):
- Monday, April 2nd 8:00-10:00
- Tuesday, April 3rd 8:00-10:00
- Wednesday, April 4th 8:00-11:00**
- Thursday, April 5th 8:00-11:00**
- Friday, April 6th 8:00-11:00
- Tuesday, April 10th 8:00-11:00**
- Wednesday, April 11th 8:00-11:00**
- Thursday, April 12th 8:00-10:00
- Thursday, April 12th 12:30-2:30
**We need significantly more volunteers on these days. All times are approximate because it is not a timed test-- will likely be much shorter!
Test Monitor Training is offered at the following days and times (you only have to attend one). Your children are welcome to attend. It should not take longer than 30 minutes.
- Monday, March 26th at 8:00
- Tuesday, March 27th at 3:00
- Thursday, March 29th at 12:30
If you would like to volunteer your time or have any questions at all, please email me at skirk2@norman.k12.ok.us or give me a call at the school 366-5927. Thank you so much for all you do for your students and our school!
With gratitude, Sarah Kirk

This Week in Class
Math:
Math:
We will wrap up Unit 6 and begin Unit 7 in math next week. The concepts we will cover this week are:
- arrays
- measurement with yards
We will have our Unit 6 math assessment on Thursday. Your child will not have any homework on Wednesday or Thursday night.
At home, please practice counting change, and getting change back with your child. This is an everyday skill that we are working on in class, and working on it at home, and in the "real world" could be very beneficial. Also, working on telling time with an analog clock, and asking questions like "What time will it be in two hours?" helps reinforce skills taught in class. As always, practice with addition and subtraction fact fluency. A good way to do this is through Xtra Math.
Literacy:
This weeks literacy concepts are:
- Sound of the week: are, air, ear, ere
- Story Genre: Poetry
- Comprehension Skill: theme
- Comprehension Strategy: visualize
- Grammar: contractions- not, is, had, would, have
- Mechanics: apostrophes with contractions
- Writing: persuasive writing
Please continue to do Smarty Ants at home with your child. The skills your child learns in this program go right with what we learn in class. It really is a great tool, and on top of it, it is fun and engaging.
Science:
Next week we will begin our States of Matter unit. We will be learning all about solids, liquids, and gases. We will learn about their different properties, and what can change a state of matter. We will conduct one science experiment where we will be able to see that heat changes a liquid into a solid. (We will do this by making cupcakes!) .
