CAREER FOCUS LUNCHEON RETURNS
This year the UCS Foundation for Educational Excellence is excited to once again sponsor the UCS Sixth Grade Career Focus Luncheon, and local business representatives are invited to have a seat at the table.
In partnership with the Sterling Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce and in cooperation with Utica Community Schools, the annual event is offered to all UCS sixth graders and will be held at the Palazzo Grande, while following the Macomb County Health Department’s COVID-19 guidance. The event will span two days, Tuesday, May 3 and Wednesday, May 4, with each sixth grader attending the luncheon one day, yet mentors are invited to choose to attend one or both days.
“Utica Community Schools is fortunate to have the support of the UCS Foundation,” Superintendent Robert Monroe said. “Through our partnership, UCS students have access to events and scholarships unique to our academic community, such as the Career Focus Luncheon.”
Attending the event himself as a sixth grader, UCS Foundation President, Sherman Abdo, says his experience is one that he still recalls to this day.
“I just remember it being a special day,” Abdo said.
At the luncheon, students will sit with fellow sixth graders as well as with one professional mentor with the opportunity to discuss the mentor’s profession and how they got there, while presenting on their own aspirations to the mentor, as well. Business sponsors and professional mentors are invited to attend the event by contacting the UCS Foundation, (586) 797-6953 or email@ucsfoundation.org.
“These students have likely never been in a professional setting before, so the goal is to have them do something different, work on their social skills and experience and learn something that they’d want to bring to their career,” said Abdo.
“There is always such enthusiasm surrounding this event from everyone involved,” Monroe said. “I’m eager to see the growth our students experience from the luncheon and the influence it has on their future.”
Further adding to the excitement of the Career Focus Luncheon is this year’s keynote speaker, Jeanna Trotman. A UCS alum, Trotman earned her bachelor's degree in communications from Lake Superior State University and a master's degree in broadcast journalism with a specialization in sports reporting from Boston University. A four-year NCAA Division-II volleyball player, and former sports department intern with WXYZ, Trotman is now a sports reporter and weekend sports anchor with 7 Action News on WXYZ.
