Perspective Unit
5th Grade continues our Unit 4 in reading focusing on the Civil Rights Movement. The unit focuses on the essential question - How do we really know what happened in the past? We will continue our work on reading primary and secondary sources and how they provide various perspectives of the same event. 5th grade will be setting goals based on their reading MAP data. Also, students should be reading every night for 30 minutes. Research supports when a student reads consistently every night, they make significant gains.
Grammar/Writing
We started our writing unit focusing on "Fractured Fairy Tales". We have read the original version of three Fairy Tales and the "Fractured" version of the same Fairy Tales. The fifth graders are comparing and contrasting them so that they can begin to create and illustrate their own "fractured" Fairy Tales.
Students are continuing the Greek and Latin Roots units for spelling and vocabulary. They are so excited when they find a unit word in their literature! Please make sure they are studying and using their Quizlet every night!
Math Workshop
The fifth graders have been developing their skills with adding fractions with unlike denominators. They have been adding both fractions and mixed numbers. Next week, students will be working with subtracting fractions and mixed numbers.
The targets or big ideas for fifth grade are:
- I can explain, recognize, and generate equivalent fractions.
- I can use a variety of strategies to add and subtract fractions and mixed numberswith unlike denominators.
