Student meal services update
The first week of the program provided 14,752 meals to students in our community. We look forward to continuing to providing free grab-and-go student meals during the district closure. Last week, meals were provided for the full seven day week. However, the Texas Department of Agriculture has instructed school districts to discontinue serving weekend meals in order to be compliant with the National School Lunch Program. Meals will continue to be served for meals Monday-Friday from 8am-1pm. Any child 18 and under has the option to receive 3 meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and 1 snack per day. All 3 meals and snack can be picked up in one visit. Pick up locations are Edison Elementary or Gainesville Junior High.
If the child is present, there is not documentation necessary. However, if the child is not present, please be prepared to present one of the following so the child nutrition staff can properly report the meals provided:
- Official letter/email from school listing children enrolled
- Individual student report card
- Attendance record from parent portal of school website
- Birth certificate for children
- Student ID cards
Parents may not receive meals for other children.
Next week we will serve Monday April 6th through Thursday April 9th. On Thursday April 9th you may pick up meals for Thursday and Friday, (2 Breakfast, 2 Lunch, 1 Snack, 1 Dinner). We will not be serving Friday April 10th. On Friday April 17th, we’ll also be serving meals for Monday April 20th (2 Breakfast, 2 Lunch, 1 Snack, 1 Dinner) to run alongside district calendar. We will not be serving meals on Monday April the 20th.

GISD elections postponed to November 3
On March 18, Governor Abbott issued a proclamation suspending provisions of the Texas Election Code to allow political subdivisions to postpone their 2020 local elections. This means local governments now have the ability to postpone their May 2, 2020 elections until November 3, 2020.
As a result of Governor Abbott's proclamation, at the Board of Trustees meeting on March 23, the Board voted to postpone the May election until November 3 due to the current COVID-19 crisis. The May election consisted of the $35.1 bond proposal as well as the Board of Trustees election.

Special Olympics Texas activities suspended through May 31
Special Olympics Texas is suspending all sport training and competition activities involving our athletes through May 31st, 2020, at which time the situation will be reevaluated. This includes Summer Games.
This decision was carefully made after Special Olympics International consulted with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and after reviewing the latest guidance from the World Health Organization.
Special Olympics has prepared a list of frequently asked questions that you can reference on the topic of virus prevention and control. We will keep you updated on further changes.
We are currently creating virtual programs to engage Special Olympics Texas athletes. We will announce more on this in the near future.
