Watching and Waiting

Has anyone noticed anything different in their Google Classrooms yet? Like the ability to add rich-text formatting? Or the ability to generate engagement reports on your students from Google Classroom? How about the ability to save a Google Form if a student isn't finished working on it yet? Chrome's built-in screen reader? Access to File Version History in Jamboard? These are just some of the updates that Google Workspace for Education plan on rolling out. There have been several posts on social media lately demonstrating the new updates, so they are out there, maybe just not to us yet. The updates will be staggered, so no definite timetable on when they will be applied to our accounts.

I have yet to see any of these updates on my Google account. Let me know if they start appearing for you if you don't mind. I'd love to come and check them out.

Alternative Method to Get Announcements Out to Your Students

Maybe you have had some feedback from your students on what we can do to improve communication between teachers and students like Taylor Hodge has had with her students. The students in Taylor's classes were complaining that the Google Classroom Stream was getting cluttered. To simplify, and make it easier for her students, she started using GoGuardian to send out announcements. This forces the student to acknowledge that they received the message, as long as they are signed into their school account in a Chrome window. See how she accomplishes this below in the tutorials. And kudos to Taylor for soliciting and implementing feedback received from her students! Well done Taylor.

New Cyclone Learning Zone Challenge Released

In the latest instructional update from Ms. Eger-Converse, a new Cyclone Learning Zone Challenge was introduced. For more information on the "Moving Forward Into 2021-2022 Challenge", click here. If you already know you are interested, click here to access the intent to participate form. The challenge is open to interested teachers and support staff (counselors, school psychologists, home school coordinators, teacher assistants providing RtI services, social workers, etc.). Check out the flyer for more information and sign up. 😀

Clubhouse App

Up until this week, I have never heard of the Clubhouse App. I was invited into an EdCamp room last Thursday evening and it blew my mind. It is a strange hybrid of a podcast, a Voxer book study, and a live phone call. Over 20 million people are already participating and it has really exploded since it launched last spring. Educators are forming 'clubs'(PLN's) left and right and the opportunities for collaboration are limitless no matter what your role in education may be. There are currently hundreds of Education Clubs and thousands of education professionals taking advantage of the platform to collaborate. If you are currently on it, let me know. I'd love to connect with you.

Yes, you heard me right, I had to be invited into the platform. Invites are tough to accumulate, so if you are interested in joining Clubhouse to connect with other positive, like-minded educators, let me know. As I generate invites, I will spread the wealth! Unfortunately, it is currently only available on the iOS platform. The android build is currently in progress and will be released soon.

These Peeps Cracked It!

Tech Tool(s) of The WEEK

Google Keep

Whether you have seen this icon before or it's the first time you have ever seen it, you will surely remember what it is moving forward. This is the icon for Google Keep. Google Keep is an extremely versatile tool whether you want to create to-do lists as we near the end of the school year, or set a reminder for an upcoming event, or create a quick note that you may want to access later. On a Chromebook with a stylus, you can even write on a note. Google Keep is a very versatile tool, often overlooked, and integrated into almost all of the Workspace for Education Applications (Calendar, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Drive, etc.). For different ways to use Google Keep, click here.

WCSD Informational Technology Website

The Informational Technology(IT) department is establishing a ticketing system to streamline the process of tracking technology issues. The ticketing system can be found using this link. (https://sites.google.com/watertowncsd.org/informationtechnology/home). This should be a website that you bookmark in case you need to reach out to the IT department.

Would you Mind Sharing?

It seems like it's been a year, but we made it through the first 4 months! I have been fortunate to witness colleagues finding their stride and using strategies and techniques that have helped with the start of this unprecedented school year. However, there are colleagues that could use some ideas on strategies and techniques that could help in their transition to this style of hybrid/remote learning. If you are willing to share, please click on the Google Form below so we can compile some strategies that have been effective for you. Just drop a quick note in the Google Form and I will be in touch. THANK YOU!!!

Feedback Welcomed and Encouraged

Please contact me so we can collaborate on how to integrate more technology into your lessons.
