Emerson Roars Rugidos de Emerson
Week of February 14- Semana del 14 de febrero
Principal's Letter
February 14, 2021
Good Afternoon and Happy Valentine’s Day Emerson Families,
We had a wonderful week welcoming back our 2nd and 3rd grade hybrid students! Thank you all for your patience, reminders of completing Raptor checks, and all of the encouragement you have given to your children and our staff! We could not do this without you! While our smiles are now tucked under masks, this week when I visited classrooms I saw many smiling eyes!
At Emerson, we are also proud to partner with Lurie’s Children’s Hospital to be part of the Trauma Responsive School program. For this program, our staff has attended and delivered professional development sessions to learn more about childhood trauma and trauma associated with the pandemic. I am so happy to report that this past week the funding of our program was approved for our school, and we will be able to go forward with a book study surrounding trauma and anti-racist teaching practices that all Emerson staff will take part in this spring.
This Thursday we invite you to log in to Mrs. Sandoval’s Zoom at 7:30p.m. for our weekly bedtime story. We are so happy that bedtime stories have been a success and that many families have made this part of our weekly routine. Also, one additional reminder, that we have no school tomorrow, February 15th, for Presidents’ Day.
Have a wonderful week and take care!

Marysol Sandoval, subdirectora
Structure and Routine
Structure and routine are important aspects of helping our children succeed and our normal routines have been disrupted by the pandemic. Although we are over halfway through this school year it might be helpful to review how your family is operating and make some adjustments if needed.
- Mornings - have a consistent time for getting up and a morning routine (getting dressed, eating breakfast).
- School - Set up a regular spot for children to attend school remotely. Have them sit at a table or desk in a quiet spot. Make sure they have all the materials they need close at hand such as school books, I-pad and charger, pencil and paper. Setting alarms for the start of class or posting a paper copy of their schedule near their study space will help them stay organized.
- Movement breaks - creating opportunities throughout the day for movement helps increase focus and decrease stress, things such as stretching, deep breathing or exercise.
- After school set some time away from screens, this could be time spent doing things that are creative such as drawing, journaling, using legos or playdough, or building something. What self care activities does your student enjoy - reading, meditation, organizing, cooking? Be intentional about setting aside time to engage in these types of activities.
- Family time - we are spending more time together as families but being in the same space doesn’t equal quality time together. Schedule time each week for family activities; game or movie night, eating meals and cooking together, taking walks or family projects.
Predictable structure and routine can help a child feel safe, maintain consistency in the home, assist them in managing their environment, aid in the development of health habits and help establish good boundaries and expectations.
