Counseling Office Appointments

Students wishing to meet with their counselor should email their counselor for an appointment. It may take a couple of days to get an appointment, so please plan ahead. See the list below for counselor assignments. Parents may schedule an appointment by emailing the counselor direct or calling 360.279.5717.

Testing

SAT and ACT Students applying for college admissions for fall 2021 do not need SAT and/or ACT scores. Colleges have either waived them or made them test-optional. Visit sat.org or act.org. Our next scheduled SAT will be May 8, 2021.

PSAT will be offered on January 26, 2021. The PSAT is used to determine eligibility and qualification for the National Merit Scholarship Program. It also serves as a practice test for the SAT. Sign-up will open on January 4th and will be limited. Priority will be given to juniors. Sophomores may take the exam if space is available. ASVAB - will be February 2, 2021. Sign-ups start on January 4th. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple-choice test administered by the United States Military Entrance Processing Command to determine enlistment qualification in the United States Armed Forces. SENIOR CORNER

Financial Aid

FAFSA (The Free Application for Student Aid) became available on October 1st. Completing the FAFSA is required to apply for financial assistance for post-secondary education (including two-year colleges, technical schools, and four-year colleges/universities). Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible for first-come, first-serve access to college funding resources. Many schools have financial aid priority deadlines starting in December. Scholarships

Winter break is a great time to review scholarship applications and start gathering the necessary information. We have a new scholarship section specific to military-connected students Scholarships. Local scholarships have started coming in and can be found on the OHHS website under counseling resources Scholarships. Download a copy of the General Application for an example of the type of information needed. Several local scholarships use a General Scholarship application. Please note: the General Application may ONLY be used for scholarships that do not have their own organizational application.

Many State/National Scholarships are now available and can be found online using one of the scholarship database search engines such as Scholarships.com, Niche, Cappex, or thewashboard.org.

College Applications

The college admission process is more competitive than ever! Schools encourage seniors to submit their applications early for best consideration for admissions, scholarships, and housing priority. Many four-year college application deadlines are approaching quickly. Many WA private universities and UW Bothell have a January 15th deadline. Washington State University and Western Washington University have a January 31st deadline. Eastern Washington University and Evergreen State College have a February 1st deadline. Students should apply as soon as possible!

Letters of Recommendation

When requesting a letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor, students must request them at least 2 weeks ahead of the deadline. If a letter is requested with less than 2 weeks' notice, the teacher/counselor may not have enough time to complete it or may not be very thorough in their response.

One of the strengths of the CharacterStrong curriculum is the relationships it builds between students to peers, students and school staff, students and family, and students and the greater community. This is done through intentional relationship-building activities that put a daily and weekly focus on what is most important to making this happen. We need to be reminded more than we need to be taught.

Lea Bahner, Joseph Barrett, Camille Glownia, and Hannah Williams got to participate in the first-ever Regional Virtual Honor Band & Orchestra on November 11th. They joined the top music students from high schools from Coupeville to Mr. Vernon to Blaine, learning two music pieces on their own, attending virtual classes with music teachers from Western Washington University, and recorded themselves performing. Hopefully, we will see the finished Virtual Band & Orchestra sometime in December!

With most high school students learning online, OHHS teachers didn't have anyone to bring recycling to the dumpster. Freshman Kellan Luible stepped up to help. He picks up teachers' recycling and hauls it all to the big bin behind the school daily.

We are the Parent Academic Booster Club at OHHS! Otherwise known as

OHHS PTO (Parent Teacher Organization).

We need your support to keep our programs at OHHS and for parents to

volunteer for the Open Board Positions! All of the PTO Board Positions are

open, and if you are interested in more information, please send us an email.

Why does a High School need a Parent-Teacher Organization? If you haven’t

noticed OHHS has a lot of Parent Groups that support a small interest group of

the school (Band, Choir, Robotics, NJROTC, Grad Night) but the PTO at the

High School supports ALL the students at OHHS, not just a certain interest group,

and our hard-working staff.

All of the PTO funds stay at OHHS to support the students at OHHS by donating

to the Invest Ed Program, Snacks for Finals, OHHS PTO Scholarships, and our

largest expenditure, the Academic Letter Program.

Since the mid-1990’s we have sponsored the Academic Letter Program. This

program encourages students ranked with their cohort class to

maintain their GPA at 3.5 or greater. Each year we award over 140 Academic

Letters to students who have received a GPA of 3.5 or greater for 3 consecutive

trimesters. We also recognize an additional over 300 students each year who

have maintained their GPA at 3.5 or greater once they have received their

Academic Letter.
