2023-2024 Reading Curriculum
Open Court Reading is research-based comprehensive K–5 reading, writing, and language arts curriculum that aligns with what we know about how students learn to read. Using systematic, explicit instruction, Open Court Reading helps all students master the foundational skills needed not only to move to proficiency, but also to achieve greater goals of reading independently with confidence inside and outside the classroom.
Read how Open Court Reading meets top tiers of Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)STAR Renaissance Assessment
Star Assessments are short tests that provide teachers with personalized learning data for each student.
Star tests are computer adaptive, which means they adjust in difficulty to each answer students provide. This helps our teachers get the best data to help students in the shortest amount of testing time (about one-third of the time other tests require).
Students may take a Star test for early literacy, math, or reading. At CES, we analyze the data they receive from Star Assessments to learn what students already know and what they are ready to learn next, monitor student growth, and determine which students may need additional help.
Star Assessments are research-based and scientifically proven to help teachers guide each student on their unique path to proficiency.

Read! Read! Read!
We understand and appreciate the vital role of families in each student’s learning and growth, and we honor the strong partnership between educators and families that helps every student succeed. Be sure to check with your student’s teacher to learn about the specific programs your student is using in school and how you can encourage their efforts at home. Here are a few questions to help get the conversation started:
- How can I support my student with goal setting?
- What one thing should I help my student improve and work on?
- What can I do at home to reinforce the work you’re doing in the classroom?
