First Days...First Rate
FMS first week is off to a great start!
We spent our first day at FMS in our Advisory classes. This allowed us to communicate valuable routines, procedures, and expectations in a clear and consistent manner. It also gave our advisory teachers an opportunity to really get to know their students! We use advisory as a time to mentor students and provide support.
Mr. Dunnavant took advantage of this time to combine a "Getting to Know You" activity with an opportunity to explore our new Chromebooks!

Getting to Know You
Falcon Playbooks help our students set goals and take responsibility for their own learning
During our first day, we also talked about what it means to be "CEO of our life". Students researched the qualities of a CEO and then discussed what it means to be CEO of their own lives. Students and Teachers identified two characteristics about themselves that they want others to see, and hold them accountable for being.
Ms. Johnson's class recorded a few of the student's commitments to being CEO of their lives, and what this means for them.

CEO of My Life
Although FMS teachers recognized the importance of spending the first few days building relationships with our students, it wasn't long before they began working on the work!
Ms. Jones used a Laying the Foundation experimental design activity "Come Fly With Us" to learn how to use the scientific method.
Estimation & measurement of metric units
Ms. Waddell's 8th grade science students applied their skills and reviewed metric conversions with a real world science activity. They also got to review some math calculations in the process!
Ms. Christy used Socrative to help formatively assess her students' understanding. She used open ended questions that asked them to think deeply and use higher order thinking in their responses. They were so engaged in their writing I had trouble getting them to tell me what they were doing!
Mr. Bonds embraced using our new Chromebooks with his students. He organized his content in Canvas, our new learning system, and spent time helping his students understand the structure and expectations.
