How Jazz Orginated

Jazz is a genre of music that originated in African American communities during the late 19th and early 20th century. It emerged in many parts of the United States in the form of independent popular musical styles, all linked by the common bonds of African American and European American musical parentage with a performance orientation.

History of Jazz

As jazz spread around the world, it drew on different national, regional, and local musical cultures, giving rise to many distinctive styles. New Orleans jazz began in the early 1910's, combining earlier brass band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime and blue with collective polyphonic improvisation. In the 1930's, heavily arranged dance-oriented in bands, Kansas City jazz, a hard-swinging, bluesy, improvisational style and Gypsy Jazz (a style that emphasized Musette waltzes) were the prominent styles.

-Gypsy Jazz: is a style of jazz music often said to have been started by guitarist Jean "Django" Reinhardt in the 1930's.

-Kansas City Jazz:is a style of jazz that developed in Kansas City, Missouri and the surrounding Kansas City Metropolitan Area during the 1930s and marked the transition from the structured big band style to the musical improvisation style of Bebop.

-Bluesy: Is the song that many African Americans song within the Jazz times.

Why Jazz is Improtant

Jazz is part of American culture. Its particularly most important to African American culture. You can't separate jazz from the struggle of African Americans. Those musicians lived through inequality. The freedom in jazz is the freedom in them. Its the freedom in everybody. Jazz itself is a success story told through it own invention. The reason that jazz is important today is also part of the reason it has always been important- because its authentic. All the true jazz masters have dedicated their lives to the evolution of music. Most other forms of music, especially today, are only interested in commercial success. Jazz is the one musical form that approaches pleasing the public as a burden. For jazz musicians, playing music is a process that is intrinsic to their own growth as a person. True jazz musicians play the music that they do as a necessity to themselves. Their music is their diary. Their diary is more pure than words can tell.
