Vietnam started in 1959 and ended April 30, 1975. The U.S fought North Korea to stop the Spread of Communism. The U.S suffered 367,864 casualties. In total 1.475 Million people were killed.
Key Laws Passed
- Civil Rights Act 1964- PRohibits the discrimination of others based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin.
- 24th Amendment- helped stop discrimination in federal elections.
- 25th Amendment- handled possible succession issues in case of the death of the president and other key leaders.
- Tonkin Gulf Resolution 1964- gave the president power so that he could send troops quickly to Vietnam without approval from congress.
Supreme Court Decisions
- Mapp vs. Ohio 367 US 643 (1961)- Dolley Mapps house was searched without proof of warrant. They found illegal items in his house so he was tried and jailed.
- Terry vs Ohio 392 US 1 (1968)- Police stopped two men on the street. Believing they had weapons they frisked the men and discovered they had firearms.
Space and Technological Changes
In the 1960s there was a space race between the US and Soviet Union. The US was the first to put a satellite in space. On April 12th, 1961 the Soviets send Yuri Gagarin to space. A month later the US send Alan Shepard. In July 20th 1969 US Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin go to the moon.
