Our Adventure Begins Here
Running Record Guidelines
System for Monitoring Running Records (North Elementary)
It is an expectation for North Elementary that running records will be a valued tool used in kindergarten through third grade. Teachers, interventionists, and administrators will work together to analyze running records, monitor effective usage, and make instructional decisions.
Non-negotiables:
Running records will be dated, analyzed with MSV, and have a teach point
Guided reading instruction will not stop for a running record “day”. Running records are integrated into guided reading groups or at other times as it fits in class schedule.
Use Fountas & Pinnell fluency scale of 1,2,3,4 (access on Google Docs) beginning at level 4. On levels A-3 note self-monitoring and use of strategies. Time about every 3rd running record.
Teachers will create and use individual Appendix H forms from Fountas and Pinnell (access on Google Docs) for each student
Running records will be on once read books NOT cold reads.
Timeline: (these are minimum requirements)
Kindergarten will complete a running record for each student based upon this schedule
1st 9 weeks- No running records required, but they can be completed at teacher discretion
2nd, 3rd, and 4th 9 weeks-

24-20: 2 running records each 9 weeks
18 and below: 3 running records each 9 weeks

28-24: 2 running records each 9 weeks
20 and below: 3 running records each 9 weeks
*Progress monitoring is not to be confused with tier 1 classroom instruction.
Monitoring:
Teachers will keep a data binder/running record binder with a tab for each student. This is where your appendix H will be kept along with your ongoing running records. See Janice McAntyre if you would like to see a fabulous example.
Brandie Linville will touch base as needed to see your data binder for ESL students.
On one running record per period check accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.
Reading interventionists will meet informally to collaborate with teachers on the usage of running records
Based upon running records and student reading levels, reading interventionists will create a list of students to monitor closely during “official” running record meetings.
Running records will be discussed as needed during RtI meetings. Please bring your data binder with you.
Responsibilities:
Teachers will complete running records based on established guidelines.
Reading interventionists will be available to collaborate with teachers and provide support.
Administrators will provide resources.
All parties involved will collaborate to make instructional decisions with a focus on student learning
Appendix H Reminders
- Record all running records on appendix H
- Include: date, title, level, percent accuracy for each running record charted
- Highlight or otherwise indicate middle of the year DRA goal on each student's appendix H
- In you data binder have a numbered tab for each student. Appendix H and all running records for each student should be placed behind their numbered tab.
- All students should have had at least one running record in addition to DRA.
