Little Panther News

Issue #3, SY 2020-2021, October 16, 2020

Little Panther families:

Our little panthers have been so busy the last two weeks! They have been working hard learning new academic content in their classrooms, completed beginning of the year assessments, demonstrated that they fully understand their classroom routines, played hard on the playground, and smiled sweetly for their school picture!

A HUGE thank you to all of our parents for your continued patience in the morning and after-school car rider line! It is a big job getting our littles safely into school and safely into your cars and we appreciate all that you are doing to help us! Please continue to display the yellow or gray sign with your child's name on it in the passenger side of your windshield to help us keep the lines moving (the two different colors tell us which radio to use to communicate with staff who are supervising those groups of students -- this helps us move the line faster).

If your child is an Option B student, you will soon meet your child's Virtual Teacher. We are pleased to welcome Ms. Konkel back to support our Young 5s and Kindergarten Option B students and we are very excited to introduce two new staff members -- Ms. Chester will support our 1st Grade Option B students and Ms. Armstrong will support our 2nd Grade Option B students. These teachers are working closely with our classroom teachers to provide a great learning experience our at-home learners!

We are looking forward to seeing you at (virtual) conferences next week! As always, thank you for sharing your little panther with us!

EVERY DAY BEFORE SCHOOL . . .

We are working hard to be able to continue face-to-face instruction! Mask wearing, social distancing, and daily symptom checking is very important to keep us all safe.

Please remember . . . families need to complete this home screening DAILY before sending your little panther to school! Check for these symptoms:

  • Temperature 100 degrees F or higher
  • Sore throat
  • New uncontrolled cough (for students with chronic allergic/asthmatic cough, a change in their cough from baseline)
  • Diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain
  • New onset of severe headache, especially with a fever
  • New loss of taste or smell

If your child has ANY of these symptoms, keep them home from school and call your family doctor/pediatrician.

Halloween (Reminder):

Halloween should be fun for ALL of our children. Since we have very young children at South, many are afraid of masks and scary costumes. Unfortunately, there are many inappropriate costumes that are marketed to young children ("slender man", sexually provocative, "Freddy Krueger", creepy clowns, etc.)

Before purchasing your child's costume, please read the following guidelines so we can keep Halloween fun for everyone:

  • Full face masks are not allowed
  • Scary, violent, sexually provocative costumes are not allowed
  • Fake blood, pretend weapons are not allowed

As we continue to follow the Governor's guidelines, volunteers / parents will not be allowed in the building for Halloween. We will still have classroom activities and our costume parade for the children. Teachers will let you know if they need any snacks for their party (all snacks must be purchased as individually wrapped products -- we cannot accept homemade treats at this time).

We are working hard at South to give our children as many of the regular experiences as possible! They have already lost so much during this pandemic. Please know that we will make sure Halloween is a positive experience for our little panthers!

Spirit Days

Spirit Days are the first Friday of the month and it is a day for us to celebrate being WPS' little panthers! Students and staff dress in WPS gear (or their favorite sports team) and we enjoy popcorn!

The PTO pops popcorn fresh for us on Spirit Days. Students can purchase a bag for 50cents (or you can pay ahead -- $4 for the year).

The South Elementary Student Council will be selling Panther Spirit grab bags for $3 each.

You can send money into school with your child for these items -- please put it in an envelope and write your child's name and the purpose of the money (Pop Corn or Panther Spirit grab bag) on the outside of the envelope.
