Friday Update

Happy Friday Foster's Finest,
We had another fantastic week here at Foster. Some fabulous field trips and special events occurred this week thanks to our fantastic PTO for funding enrichments for our school. In my short time here it is evident that this community is supportive and eager to help provide us with enrichments that tie in with our curriculum. We truly have a dedicated PTO and parents who support us. It is very special to be a part of this fantastic place.
We are currently in the middle of our MCAS assessments. I had some conversations with students this week indicating that they are very nervous when it comes to taking the assessment. They should not be. At this age group this assessment is about our curriculum and our instruction. We want our students to do their best so that we get accurate data to make any adjustments needed to our instructional practices and curriculum. Our staff have taken the time to identify areas that we need to improve upon based on the aggregate results. We have used the results to have specific and targeted professional development to facilitate improvement.
In many cases it appears that there are older siblings who are talking about not graduating if they don't pass or are telling the younger students how awful the assessment is. This should not be something that causes students to be nervous or even scared. The "what ifs" are not something they should be concerned with. Please stress that all we ask is that they do their best, show what they have learned, and let the adults worry about the rest. A good night's sleep, a nice breakfast, and to come to school to do their best is all we ask, just like every other day.
Have a great weekend!
Mr. Scheufele
DRESS CODE
As the warm weather is approaching, we want to make sure our students are dressing appropriately for school. We are seeing some students come to school wearing clothing that may not be appropriate for school. We can dress for the weather without wearing attire that is more appropriate for the gym or the beach. Thank you kindly for helping us with this concern. Here is a link to the handbook if you wish to review it with your child.
Calling all inventors… CAMP INVENTION Returns!!
We are bringing Camp Invention back to Foster School this summer, the week of July 10th through the 14th. Inquiry-based, hands-on activities focus on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The price for the week is $335. This will be our 11th summer hosting camp at Foster School, and every year it gets better! This summer we will be offering the WONDER™ Program - you can learn more about the program and register for camp at fosterinvents.weebly.com **REGISTRATION OPENS Wed, March 1st at 8pm. Downtown Hingham Family Scavenger Hunt
Saturday, May 6 from 1-3 PM
This fun, community-building event is open to all Hingham students and their families. We will gather in the St. John’s parking lot at 172 Main Street in Hingham for a 1 pm start to the hunt, prepared by Hingham Historical Society interns. The event will include lunch at Morrell’s BBQ back at the church. Hope to see you there! This event is free, but registration by April 28th is required. See link to register.
Art Showcase
Spring is here, which means that it is almost time for our Hingham Public Schools Art Showcase! It will be held Thursday, April 27th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the High School Cafeteria. Art from all schools will be on display, representing what the children learn in art class throughout the District. All families are invited. If your child has a piece of art in the Showcase, they will receive an invitation. (I have not received the invitations yet.)
One of the reasons I started Artsonia so long ago is that there is not enough room to showcase the art of all students on that one night. Children at Foster School have their art "up on display" on Artsonia. First, Second and third grade students have all recently had a piece of theirs uploaded. You can see the galleries here: https://www.artsonia.com/schools/school.asp?id=104097
Click on a gallery image to open the class. If you are unable to see your child's image in the class gallery, please let me know (or you can give your permission here: https://www.artsonia.com/connect/4DMS33D4)
