Act 1 Prevention Classes for All Grade Levels
During the first two weeks of December, Act 1 classes will be taught at all grade levels. Act 1 is a law relating to Vermont’s sexual abuse response system that was passed in 2009 and took effect in schools July 2011. This law came about, in part, as a result of the statistics that pointed to the widespread nature of child sexual abuse both nationally and across the state of Vermont. One component of the law requires that all Vermont schools provide prevention education at every grade level that is both age and developmentally appropriate.
In order to meet the mandate, Chamberlin has implemented components of the We Care Elementary Program for grades 3-5 and Care for Kids Program for K-2. The curriculum focuses on a variety of topics such as boundaries, empathy, communication skills, coping, healthy relationships, and trusted adults. Act 1 programs are about life skills. This is not health nor sex education. Both programs are sponsored through Prevent Child Abuse Vermont and has been the agency that provides training to facilitators and develops the curriculum.
A letter came home with your child with more specific information about the classes. If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Farrell and Mr. Melen (kfarrell@sbschools.net and dmelen@sbschools.net).

Master Planning and Visioning Presentation at the PTO Meeting RESCHEDULED (AGAIN) for December 10th
As you may know, the South Burlington School Board voted on June 6th to move forward with plans to build new middle and high schools at the existing 500 Dorset Street campus. A group of district administrators, staff, faculty, and board members has been working over the summer with architects Dore + Whittier to develop the next phase of a design for the new schools. Cost estimates are being prepared in advance of the community vote in March, 2020. Representatives from the South Burlington School Board and the architecture firm will be joining the next PTO meeting to share a 20 minute presentation. Please consider coming to learn firsthand about the significant changes that will impact future middle and high school students.
Tuesday, December 10th
Chamberlin Library
PTO meeting starts at 6:00 pm

Winter Weather is Here
The cold weather is here! Please be sure you send your child with long pants, snow pants, boots, jacket, hats, and mittens to wear at recess every day. Remember to label your child’s outdoor gear.
HEAD-TO-TOE TIPS FOR DRESSING FOR WINTER WALKING TO SCHOOL
- Keep your hands and head covered to prevent heat loss
- On really cold days, wear a scarf over your face and mouth
- Wear a warm coat that deflects the wind
- Wear warm, waterproof boots
- Woolen clothing helps to retain the heat
- Wear clothing or carry knapsacks with reflective material - it's important to be seen
- If possible, change wet clothes at school - tuck an extra pair of socks and mitts into knapsacks
Below -13oF is considered too cold for walking--move your walk indoors, or select another day for outdoor activities and walking to school.
