Reading
Reading is fundamental. In fact, it is one of the most important ingredients to becoming all that you can be. Reading develops your brain, provides a window into the world around you and helps you do better in all school subjects. Most importantly, reading can not only help you become a better student, but a better person. You can learn from the brightest people whenever and wherever you choose. As important as reading is did you know that 800 million people around the world cannot read or write. Many families (and some schools) have no books for children to read. There are likely many children and people in your town or city that fall into this group. If you are already a strong reader, helping others to read is an amazing gift that you can give. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.
We have been talking about how “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” I had the opportunity to observe students at Waycross Middle School last week and saw how their tremendous hard work is paying off. As I walked in their school, my first thought was, “Oh, how I love my own Seahawk students!” Although that mindset never left me, I found myself forming a higher and higher respect for the Waycross Bulldog children. They lack many of the advantages our students have. They certainly have faced more challenges in life than our students. Yet, they are outperforming us. While I think our kids are much wiser, smarter, and more talented, their students really work HARD for their grades. They don't take opportunities for granted. They don’t get to take retests. They prepare for tests the first time they are given. They take their homework and studying time very seriously. It was interesting to see and very encouraging. As a faculty, we are taking a hard look at other schools outside our district that are doing great things, especially those with less resources than our students are afforded. As parents, I ask you to encourage your children to put in as much hard work into their studies as they do into soccer, dance, and all of the other wonderful activities which they pursue. More than anything, please partner with us to instill in our children a spirit of thankfulness for all of the gifts that we do have here in our community and help us to never allow ourselves or our kids to take any of it for granted. May this holiday season rekindle our passion for truly being a school of "excellence without limits."

IB
- Identities and Relationships: One of the questions that parents and teachers of middle schoolers frequently hear is, “How is this going to help me in real life?” The IB Global Contexts seek to answer that question by providing a set of "lenses" through which students explore ideas, investigate connections between subject areas, and apply their knowledge to real world issues. The first Global Context, Identities and Relationships, poses the questions, “Who am I? Who are we?” Approaching the curriculum through this “lens” helps students understand their roles in their families, the community, and the world. Personal and Cultural Identity: The IB Global Contexts are a set of "lenses" through which students explore ideas, investigate connections between subject areas, and apply their knowledge to real world issues. The second Global Context, Personal and Cultural Identity, poses the question, “What is the nature and purpose of creative expression?” Students will explore the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values. They will explore the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity and our appreciation of the aesthetic.
Parent Testimonial
This has been a great school year! The teachers are very dedicated and work hard to ensure that the students are challenged at high levels. My son says that he sees the principals throughout the building, and they frequently asks the students about what they are learning. There seems to be a high level of respect and trust between teachers and the leadership at the school. We love the school. The teachers are nice and my child comes home everyday with a smile. He learns a lot, so I am glad that we decided for him to attend Coastal. I would definitely recommend this school to any middle school family.
