What is Active Monitoring?
Testing season is around the corner. Active monitoring is essential for proper testing procedures. What is active monitoring? Simply put…watching students during testing.
The focus of the teacher’s attention is on the students and not elsewhere. Anything that deviates your attention is unacceptable both as a test administrator or as a hall monitor/proctor.
New for 2017 testing: Cell Phone/Telecommunication Devices for Staff are not allowed. Test administrators and campus personnel are asked to turn off all devices (and leave them in your vehicle or turn them in to your Campus Testing Coordinator) when in a secured testing environment during test administration.— This includes cell phones, iPads, and all personal fitness devices (i.e. Fitbits, Apple watches, Garmin Vivofit, etc).
Taking these measures aids in ensuring that students are being properly and actively monitored AT ALL TIMES, in accordance with state policies and procedures.

Coastal Bend Regional History Fair, 2017 Announces Winners
Texas History Day provides a framework for successful student projects. Each student bases their project on the same annual theme and rule book. Students choose historical topics related to a theme and conduct extensive primary and secondary research at libraries, archives, museums, historic sites, and more. Projects are not limited to any particular time period or geographic area. After analyzing and interpreting their source material, create a plan to present their findings to the peers and teachers before moving on to regional, state, and possibly national contests. Students can create and present original research papers, exhibits, performances, websites, and documentaries.
In addition to discovering the exciting world of the past, Texas History Day also helps students develop the following attributes that are critical for future success:
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
Project management skills
Research and reading skills
Teamwork
Oral and written communication and presentation skills
Self-esteem and confidence
The Texas National History Day Program not only teaches students about history, it encourages them to participate in history!
Congratulations to all!

South Coastal Bend Destination Imagination Tournament
The mission of Texas Destination Imagination is to encourage and foster the development of 21st-century skills: creativity, problem-solving, critical thinking and collaboration; to influence the development of a positive self-image and to prepare the students of Texas to apply problem-solving skills to life decisions. Texas Destination Imagination is a problem solving educational organization that strives to promote creativity in the young people of Texas. The DI core program is educationally based in which student teams solve open-ended Challenges through the use of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and fine arts. Teams are tested to think on their feet, work together and devise original solutions that satisfy the requirements of the Challenges.
The Destination Imagination Challenge Program is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, curiosity and courage through academic Challenges. Students who participate learn invaluable skills as well as patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem-solving process.
Students competed at the South Coastal Bend Regional Tournament at Veteran's Memorial High School on Saturday, March 4, 2017. Students in elementary through junior high school competed in the event. Students formed teams of up to 7 members and have been working for months to solve problems to specific complicated tasks (challenges), students selected their preferred Challenge and work together to develop a solution to the Challenge. Each team had one Team Manager (who helped keep the team on track but can not assist or interfere with the team’s project).
Student's from Hillcrest, Salazar, Schallert, Dubose, Memorial, Saenz, and WAMS competed in various categories including:
The Technical Challenge
The Technical Challenge prompts students to complete tasks by using engineering, research, strategic planning and related skills.
POINTS OF INTEREST
- Present a show that includes an opening act and a headlining act.
- Design and build a stage on which the acts will take place and that will move a team member from one location to another.
- Enhance each act with a technical effect to amaze the audience.
- Create and present two Team Choice Elements that show off the team’s interest, skills, areas of strength, and talents.

- Create and integrate a disguised character into the story.
- Create and present two Team Choice Elements that show off the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents.
ENGINEERING CHALLENGE
The Engineering Challenge asks teams to design, build and test load-bearing structures out of specific materials.
POINTS OF INTEREST
- Design, build and test multiple free-standing structures that work together.
- Develop a strategy for placing structures to support as much weight as possible.
- Develop and present a collaborative solution to a global issue.
- Create and present two Team Choice Elements that highlight the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents.

POINTS OF INTEREST
- Create three improvisational skits from the same story prompt.
- Present each skit in a different performance genre.
- Portray a different stock character in each skit.
- Enhance each skit with props.
EARLY LEARNING / RISING STARS!®
The Rising Stars! for Early Learners Challenge offers simple experiences with the creative process, and it gives young kids (preschool through 2nd grade) a place to work together and make new friends.
POINTS OF INTEREST
- Learn about simple and complex machines.
- Use simple machines to create and build a new invention.
- Create a play that tells a story about how the new invention helps to save the day.
- Create props, scenery, and costumes to help tell the story.
INSTANT CHALLENGE
Instant Challenges require teams to engage in quick, creative and critical thinking.
At a tournament, all teams received an Instant Challenge and the materials with which to solve it. The team members had to think on their feet by applying appropriate skills to produce a solution in a period of just five to eight minutes. In a world with growing cultural connections, increased levels and types of communication, and a new need for real-time teamwork and problem solving, the ability to solve problems quickly is becoming increasingly critical. Instant Challenges are performance-based, task-based, or a combination of the two. Although each Instant Challenge has different requirements, all Instant Challenges reward teams for their teamwork. Instant Challenges are kept confidential through the day of the tournament.

Decathletes Represent Alice ISD at the State Event
The United States Academic Decathlon (USAD) is a program that provides high school students an opportunity to experience the challenges of rigorous academic competition through participation in team activities.
The Academic Decathlon program was initiated in California in 1968 by Orange County Academic Decathlon Association in cooperation with the Orange County Superintendent of Schools. Region contests were held until 1979 when California held the first statewide competition. In 1982, the competition became a national event and the USAD was formed. Texas became a USAD member in 1984.
The Academic Decathlon is designed to include students of three academic levels. Each nine-member team consists of three Honors students, three Scholastic students, and three Varsity students.
