Next Week - STAAR Test Dates

3rd-5th Grade Reading: May 18 & 19
Watch class newsletters for specific class testing dates.
Even if your student is not in 3rd-5th there will be things that effect them here at school such as schedule changes. Lunch times will remain the same. The campus is closed to visitors on testing days. That means, parents of students at any grade level will not be able to have lunch with their child on the days listed above. You can drop off a lunch at school if needed, but no visitors.
If you have a student testing please try not to schedule appointments on those days. It is also important that students are at school on time. Testing protocols will start promptly at 7:45.

Summer Skills Practice in IXL
As parents begin making plans for preventing the "summer slide", IXL has prepared resources to make that easy and fun.
Parent Handouts This one-page parent PDF includes login information, directions on choosing skills, and how to view progress. (Bonus: they are available in both English and Spanish!)
Summer Skill Plans are created as a set of plans that provide 20 days worth of skill recommendations for both enrichment and remediation, with a focus on challenging, summative skills that cover critical topics for each grade level in order to get students ready for the new school year:
- For Enrichment - Summer Adventures - Daily themed adventures that allow students to explore Math & ELA in grades K-1, and Math, ELA, Science, and Social Studies skills in grades 2-8.
- For Remediation - Summer Boost: Math & ELA - Four weeks of IXL skills for solidifying essential Math & ELA concepts for students in K-12.
* For both plans, students should select their grade for the upcoming fall (e.g., rising third graders should use the third grade plan).

Camp Invention
Spark your kid’s creativity and build their confidence with our new Camp Invention® program, Explore! When this nationally acclaimed program comes to Jessica Carpenter Elementary from June 13th to June 17th, children in grades K-6 will collaborate with friends in hands on, open-ended STEM adventures. They’ll dive into ocean research with their own robotic fish, develop inventions for space exploration, build a spinning robotic artist and design a mega marble arcade! Each activity is designed to inspire curiosity, stretch imaginations and give your explorer an epic summer experience. Visit invent. org/mylocalcamp to secure your spot! Use promo code SUM15 by 5/18 to save $15.
Visitors at Riojas
- Bring an ID. Per district requirements, visitors must have their driver's license scanned and entered into the Raptor visitor system. This system runs a background check on all visitors.
- Students will still walk independently to class. This has always been our procedure, even before 2020. If you need to speak to a teacher in person, please contact the teacher and make an appointment.
- Eating lunch with your child: The blue picnic tables in the hallway are for parents to eat lunch with their child. Parents are not permitted to eat lunch inside the cafeteria due to spacing constraints. With over 900 students, our cafeteria is packed! The teacher will bring the class to the cafeteria, so you can meet your child in the lobby. You may go through the serving line and purchase a cafeteria lunch, or you may bring food. Please know that you may not bring students other than your own child into the hallway for lunch. Lunch times are on the document linked below. Also, lunch visitors must stay in the front lobby and cafeteria areas of the school. Do not return to class with your child unless you are "volunteering." See number 4 below. Please come early to allow time to go through the process of getting a visitor's badge. Sometimes there is a line of visitors getting a badge at the same time.
- Volunteering: We are excited about this! Teachers would appreciate help making instructional materials, reading with students, etc. To be on campus as a volunteer, it is a district requirement that you fill out the Volunteer Application which includes a background check. Please know that it can take 2-4 weeks for approval. You will receive an email from the district upon approval.
Please call the front office for any questions about visiting the campus. 512-594-4100
New Student Enrollment Open
Enrollment for students new to Riojas for the 2022-2023 school year is open starting Monday, March 21. All of the information needed, including the forms that must be completed can be found at this link: https://www.pfisd.net/domain/232
Existing PreK students already attending Riojas: Families should send in one proof of residency to the office. (PreK students are required to attend their home campus for Kindergarten. Riojas is a home campus for our Bilingual students.)
Existing K-5 students: If your child is a current K-5 student at Riojas, you do not need to re-enroll, but you will be required to complete a verification that will come through email in April.
Enrolling new students before the end of the school year is very important, because we base staffing numbers on enrollment numbers. If we need more teachers, we would want to know that now instead of knowing that in August. Please pass this information along to all your new neighbors!
Please contact our registrar, Monica Evans, for any enrollment questions. Monica.Evans@pfisd.net or 512-594-4100.
Checking Out Your Child Early
We would like to respectfully ask that early check outs be for high need situations only and only on rare occasions. Please try to schedule doctor appointments and trips out of town for AFTER school hours.
Special Areas Schedule
Parents,
This rotation for students was created with the purpose of creating small groups in each Special Area classroom. Students have been assigned their own color group for specials. (It is no longer by homeroom.) Please ask your child what his/her color is for specials and then use the attached calendar to know what specials class they will attend each day. We are on a 6 day rotation (A-F), so they will have 4 days of PE, one day of Music, and one day of Art.
Specials Rotation 2021-2022
Parents, please make sure your teacher knows how your child will go home.
