Mrs. Drudy's eLearning Day #1
November 19, 2019
Day #1 Agenda
Good morning, and welcome students and families to our 1st eLearning Day of the 2019-2020 school year. I'm hopeful that the students will find these activities both fun and easy to do. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me via e-mail during the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. if you have questions or concerns about the assignments and/or activities. I may be reached at tammy.drudy@uc.k12.in.us. As you've already noticed, hard copies and supplies have been distributed for nearly all of the activities, but links to these documents are also included below.
Please return the die in the Ziploc bag along with the finished assignments.
Please send all finished assignments at one time.
All of our students will be informed of their learning targets for the day by looking at the statements under the words "Big Idea." These statements are always posted in the classroom so students are aware of their learning expectations.
The student work for this day covers content that would have been addressed if school were in session in a traditional setting. Students will be given 3 school days from the 19th to have lessons returned to school. This means all eLearning day activities should be turned in by Friday, November 22nd. If these assignments are not turned in by this time, this day will be counted as an absence for your child.
So... let's get started!
Morning Message
Obviously, you do not have your whiteboard nor your task journal at home, so simply complete the Morning Message tasks on the recording sheet that's included and return to school when we get back. Click below to download and read the Morning Message.
Big Idea:
We can read grade-level appropriate or higher texts smoothly and accurately, with expression that connotes comprehension at the independent level.
Spelling
Read each sentence. Then fill in the bubble next to the word that is spelled correctly. If none of the choices are correct, fill in the bubble next to the choice “none.”
Big Idea:
We can correctly spell words with short and long vowel sounds, r-controlled vowels, and consonant-blend patterns.
Reading & Social Studies: Pilgrim Life Long Ago
After reading the news magazine, go to the "Extend the lesson" activities and choose the video "Pilgrim Life." If you would like more information about vocabulary, then choose that section. Just for fun you might wish to play the "Pilgrim Life Long Ago" game.
After viewing the video, you will complete the front-to-back copies of My Day and A Pilgrim Child's Day Long Ago. Those students without Internet access will still be able to complete this activity.
Big Idea:
We can explain changes in daily life in the over time using maps, photographs, news stories, web sites or video images.
- We can compare and contrast Pilgrim children 's lives long ago with our own lives today.
Reading: Author's Purpose
Persuade
Inform
Entertain
Surely, the author of Pilgrim Life Long Ago wrote to inform. We were taught what life was like for the children long ago. You will need to get on ixl and choose 2nd grade language arts. From there, please select AA.1 Author's Purpose. Click here to log in to ixl. You will be choosing the text to match the author's purpose. Remember, ixl is available on smartphones and tablets, too.
Your student login and password can be found in the e-Learning Ziploc bag.
Students without Internet access will have the opportunity to complete this activity at school.
Big Idea: We can identify what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe in the text.
Math: Roll and Write
We will practice our math facts fluency with a focus on the nines. First, watch the video below to remind you of the "Nine's Secret." Then use the number cube that's included in the Ziploc bag to complete the Roll and Write activity. Here's what you do:
- Find someone to time you for 3 minutes.
- Write your name, the date, and wait for the timer.
- Keep your pencil in your hand the whole time. Don't put it down to roll.
- Put your hand on the table and let go of the dice (not like a board game).
- Write the number you roll as the first addend.
- Write 9 as your second addend.
- Find and record the sum.
- When the time is up, draw a line under the last problem you were able to complete and record that number at the bottom of your paper.
- If you did not finish them all, then please do so without a timer.
Big Idea:
I can add and subtract fluently within 100.
