Mr. Goetz's Corner
We had a great time this week at our Family Dance, with our famous DJ Jazzy Nash! It was wonderful to see many of our friends and their families celebrating with us. The smiles on the kids faces made my day. A big thank you to Katia Kopko and Marlina Heemsoth for helping to organize this wonderful event. Also, thank you to Rachel Thornton and Andrea Swartz for organizing our raffle baskets!
Next week, October 18-22, there is no school. It is our Intercession week, so our school will not be in session. Only families who were notified already will attend Intercession classes at Avondale Meadows for the week.
During Intercession, our Dads group will be helping to clean up the Deerfield grounds. We will be meeting at Deerfield on Tuesday, October 19 at 5:00 pm. We could use help from all available volunteers!
Our Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on October 26th and November 4th. We will be conducting our conferences via Zoom. Your child's teacher will provide the link to use, as well as the sign-up for scheduling conferences. If you have more than one student, please do not schedule them back to back, in case there is a delay. The specials teachers, resource room teachers, and intervention teachers will also be available if you need to speak with them. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's teacher.
We are still in need of 1 more paid lunch time supervisors. Please contact the office if you are interested in part time employment.
Have a great weekend!

The Positivity Project
This week's Positivity theme was Integrity. Integrity is doing the right thing when nobody is watching. People with integrity practice what they preach and maintain a consistent pattern of behavior aligned with their values. They have the courage not to follow the crowd if it means going against their beliefs. Integrity is closely aligned with the terms of honesty and authenticity. People with integrity tell the truth and have alignment in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
“The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively.” Bob Marley

Pink Out Day - Oct. 26th
October 29th Halloween Celebration
We are excited to celebrate Halloween with our Deerfield friends! We will have a costume parade outside (weather permitting) at 2 pm, then students will celebrate with their friends in their individual classrooms. Family members are welcome to watch the parade outdoors, but only students will be able to return to the building for their classroom party after the parade.
Students may choose to bring a costume to school to change into prior to the parade. Costumes should not be worn to school and should be brought in a bag marked with the child's name. Costumes should be able to be put on OVER your child's school clothes.
Please keep in mind the following building guidelines for costumes at school:
- We ask that children NOT wear costumes depicting violence or violent acts or anything scary. This includes fake blood, gore or imagery that would not be "G-rated".
- Masks may be worn only during the parade and not in the classrooms.
- School policy prohibits any and all toy guns, knives, swords or weapons.
Please reserve elaborate costumes, frightening masks, face paint and make-up, for trick or treating as these things can create a school disruption. Halloween is an exciting time. Let's all help to make sure it is a safe and positive experience for the children while at school. Thank you for your support with these guidelines.

Impact of Social Media on Mental Health
ATTN: Community Editors
CONTACT: Suzanne Weinert, 248-759-1991, weinerts@oaklandchn.org
OAKLAND COUNTY, MI (October 14, 2021) – In response to recent concerns related to social media and mental health, Oakland Community Health Network (OCHN), Oakland County Health Division (OCHD), and the Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities collaborated to develop some important resources for the community.
The information includes evidence-based articles, studies, and materials to assist individuals in making healthy choices regarding social media interaction. Below are some findings noted in the resources, visit the link below for more comprehensive information.
- If the majority of your interactions with others are coming through a screen or in written messages, especially when you are young and your brain is still developing, you may be missing out on opportunities to improve your people skills through face-to-face communication.
- Social media may trigger feelings of inadequacy. People may feel as though their life or appearance does not compare favorably with that of others on social media, leading to feelings of envy and dissatisfaction.
- Using less social media than you normally would leads to significant decreases in both depression and loneliness.
An extensive list of resources and information to aid adults, families, and teens in determining responsible use of social media and understand the affects overuse can have on our everyday lives, can be found on the OCHN website at oaklandchn.org, select the NEWS/EVENTS tab, Impacts of Social Media link.
About The Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities
The Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities, founded in 2004, is comprised of 21+ community prevention coalitions serving fifty-five+ local communities in Oakland County. Through substance abuse prevention, mental and physical wellness, and recovery support programs, the Alliance connects, strengthens, and mobilizes strategic partners to promote healthier communities. About OCHN
Oakland Community Health Network (OCHN) leads a provider service network that assists approximately 21,000 Oakland County citizens at more than 300 service sites across the county. People who receive public mental health services through OCHN's provider network include those who have an intellectual or developmental disability, mental health challenge, or substance use disorder. The majority of these individuals have Medicaid insurance coverage. OCHN's goal is to ensure these individuals are aware of and have access to services and supports that will improve their health and quality of life, as well as ensure their engagement in full community participation. Its mission to “inspire hope, empower people, and strengthen communities” reflects an unyielding belief in a "Valuable System for Valued People." Programs and supports provided by OCHN's service network are available at www.oaklandchn.org

Positive COVID Cases at School
In an effort to keep everyone informed about positive COVID instances here at Deerfield Elementary, we have included a link to the current number of cases detected in school. Individual classrooms will be notified of a positive case of COVID in each classroom, should that occur.
