Students and Parents: If you or your student has received any scholarship money from ANY school (even the schools they are not attending). Please let Ms. Turnipseed know.
Please pay close attention to DEADLINES and POSTMARK DATES
The following scholarships have various deadlines in February and March, but these are great to get a jumpstart on. ALL OF THESE ARE SPECIFIC TO GASTON COUNTY, so you have a BETTER chance of being awarded them! Max J. Fowler Scholarship: Award: ONE $500 scholarship per year, renewal is possible for up to four years. Criteria: MUST BE ACCEPTED TO NC STATE and be in the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences or College of Engineering. Selection criteria are based on character, academic achievement, and community service, order of importance is as follows: community service, school performance, class ranking, any additional interests in the music or the arts, and financial need. To complete the application you will need, a transcript, official SAT or ACT information, documentation of financial need (copy of FAFSA or similar documentation) a copy of your acceptance letter from NC State. Two letters of recommendation, one personal-one academic. For a copy of the application, please visit the link above. Deadline: Applications must be received by or postmarked on or before March 29th.
Paul F. Fuller Scholarship: This scholarship was established in honor of Paul Fuller, an enthusiastic participant of the Chamber of Commerce’s and Gaston County Schools Student Mentoring Program. The applicant MUST have been a part of the Mentoring Program and a graduating senior from Gaston County Schools.If you would like a copy of the application, please contact Valerie Yatko at Gaston County Schools, 704-866-6329.
Clyde & Dezaree Brackett Family Scholarship: Award: scholarships of up to $1,000 as justified by the quality and number of applications and available funds, renewal is available with the understanding that you must maintain a 2.0 GPA while in college and be in good standing with the college or university. Criteria: Must be a senior graduating from a Gaston County School. For a copy of the application, please visit the link above. Deadline: Applications must be received by or postmarked on or before March 2nd.
Tom Browne Scholarship: Award: several $1,000 scholarships as justified by the quality and number of applications. Renewal is not automatic, but the previous years’ winners are eligible to apply. Criteria: Be in the process of graduating from Gaston County Schools who demonstrates a strong interest in the professional field of construction or related trades and professions. Planned course of study may include either four-year school in architecture and engineering OR community college/technical school courses in such areas as civil technology, HVAC, or welding. To complete the application you will need a high school transcript, official SAT or ACT information, documentation of financial need (copy of FAFSA) and official acceptance letter to a school with relatable field per scholarship criteria. Mildred J. Sadler Scholarship: Award: ONE $1,000 scholarship—however the maximum amount of a scholarship is limited to actual cost of tuition and student fees. Criteria: Current year African American high school senior who is in the process of graduating from Gaston County Schools. Students are ineligible if they have a criminal record or evidence of drug use. Scholarship may be used at any accredited college or university or specialized technical school. To complete the application you will need a high school transcript, official SAT or ACT scores, documentation of financial need (copy of FAFSA). Alfred W. Bohanan Scholarship: Award: TWO $2,000 scholarship and eligible for renewal each year if grades are maintained. Criteria: Must be a student who is planning on attending Gaston College, Cleveland Community College, York Technical College or Central Piedmont Community College and majoring in machining, air conditioning, auto mechanic, construction, electrical, or plumbing. Must have a GPA of a 2.0 or better in core subjects, and must be employed part-time for at least 20 hours per week while attending school. Scholarship may be used at any accredited technical school. To complete the application you will need a high school transcript, documentation of financial need (copy of FAFSA or similar documentation) and official confirmation of acceptance in a school with a program applicable to Trade degrees. Lonnie & Rachel Waggoner Nursing Education Edowment Fund: A permanent endowment to honor the professional and community service contributions of Dr. Lonnie Waggoner. Annual scholarship grants to students seeking an accredited degree in the field of nursing. The award can go to graduating high school seniors or to those wishing to upgrade their skills. Awards shall be for one year only. Applicants for the scholarship must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited nursing program offering degrees in one or more of the following: LPN, RN, or BSN. William P. & Odessa Swann Phillips Scholarship: Award: TWO $2,000 scholarships and eligible for renewal for up to four years, must maintain a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Criteria: Financial need, work ethic, strong positive moral character and academic achievement. Must be a current year African American high school senior planning to graduate in the spring. Scholarship can be used at any accredited college or university or a specialized technical school. In order to complete the application you will need high school transcript, documentation of financial need (copy of FAFSA) and a copy of SAT or ACT scores. John E. Willoughby Scholarship: The purpose of this scholarship is to aid a Gaston County High School graduate who is seriously sight/hearing impaired or a child of a person who is sight/hearing impaired. Applicants must have been a resident of Gaston County for at least one year at the time of the deadline date, March 31st, to be eligible. To qualify, the graduate must attend an accredited NC college or university. Please contact the Community Foundation for an application OR see Ms. Turnipseed for a paper application. Deadline for application is March 29th.
Jarman Family Scholarship: Award: ONE $5,000 scholarship. This scholarship was established to help children of full-time religious ministers who are residents of North or South Carolina to achieve an undergraduate or graduate degree. One recipient is chosen per year based on character, academic achievement and need. In order to complete the application you will need a high school transcript, documentation of financial need (copy of FAFSA), and SAT or ACT scores. Deadline: March 1st.

Gaston College All Scholarships: Gaston College All Scholarships Discipline: Varies Award: Varies Requirements: Varies There are numerous Gaston College scholarships. Some are need based, some are merit based, some are dependent on your program of study. You must first apply to Gaston College. You will be assigned a Gaston College email address. This email address must be used to sign in to the scholarship application program. Once you sign in, you should be able to apply to multiple scholarships from the database. Jagannathan Scholarship (NCSEAA-North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority) Discipline: Academic & Financial Need Scholarship Award: Up to $3,500 per year Requirements: Excellent scholastic record (the avg. unweighted gpa of recipients last year was 3.8); financial need; only one student can be nominated by each high school; CSS Profile must be filed by February 8! Johnson & Wales University Academic Scholarships Discipline: General; Must attend Johnson & Wales University Award: Varies depending on specific scholarship Requirements: Visit website and click on individual scholarships to see their eligibility requirements. Our Future Scholarship Discipline: General Award: $12,500 per year for four years Requirements: Must be the child of an active duty Service Members stationed at one of the following:Fort Meade, Fort Bragg, Fort Polk, Fort Rucker, Fort Riley, Fort Sill, Aberdeen Proving Ground; must be a senior with a 3.0 GPA or higher;attend 4-year institution Deadline: February 11, 2016 Contact: Visit http://corviasfoundation.org/?id=applicationinformation
Catawba College - McCorkle Scholarship Discipline: General Award: Amounts to be announced. Requirements: Consideration for the McCorkle Scholarship is by invitation only. In order to be considered for an invitation, students must first apply for admission to Catawba. Those subsequently invited to compete must provide a recommendation from a teacher or administrator, submit an essay of approximately 400-600 words (on a selected topic which you will receive by invitation), and submit a co- curricular listing of achievements by the appropriate deadline. SAT Math sub-score & critical Reading sub-scores totaling 1150 or ACT composite Score of 25 & academic grade point average of 3.5. Scholarships for Military Children Discipline: General Award: min. $1,500 Requirements: Available to the unmarried children (under age 23) of active duty, Reserve/Guard, retired and deceased military personnel. You must be enrolled or plan to enroll full time in an undergraduate program leading to a bachelor's degree at an accredited college or university to be eligible for this award. Additionally, you must have a minimum unweighted 3.0 GPA. Students attending a community or junior college must be enrolled in a program of studies designed to allow the student to transfer directly into a four-year program. Additional Information: Applicants must ensure that they, as well as their sponsor, are currently enrolled in the DEERS database and have a current ID card. National Co-Op Scholarship Program Discipline: General Award: $6,000 (renewable) Requirements: Students must: Have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale; and complete all the required admissions applications material and be accepted for admission at one of the National Commission Partner Institutions, which are: Clarkson University, Drexel University, Johnson & Wales University, Kettering University, Rochester Institute of Technology, State University of New York Oswego, University of Cincinnati, University of Massachusetts Lowell, University of Toledo, & Wentworth Institute of Technology. Matthew Graziadei Achievement Award Discipline: General Award: $1,000 Requirements: Award given to an outstanding senior with a disability. ALL students, including students enrolled in the Future Ready Course of Study, students enrolled in the Occupation Course of Study and students who will be receiving a Graduate Certificate, are eligible for nomination. Buick Achievers Scholarship Discipline: General (NOTE: The majority of the scholarships will be awarded to students majoring in Engineering/Technology fields.) Award: 1,000 Buick Achievers Scholarships of $2,000; 100 Buick Achievers National Scholarships of up to $25,000 per year, renewable for up to four years, and one additional year for those entering a five-year engineering program. Albert G. Myers Scholarship Discipline: General Award: $5,000 per year renewable for four years. Requirements: Must be a resident of Gaston County and attend a public or private high school in Gaston County. Recipients must also be US Citizens. Awards are based on financial need, purpose in life, character, qualities of leadership, participation in student and community activities, & high school scholastic achievement. Charlotte Metro Area Relocation Council Scholarship Discipline: General Award: $1,000 Requirements:Must be a senior in good standing in a greater Charlotte area high school; must have relocated to the Charlotte area between grades 9-12; relocated more than 50 miles & changed schools due to family's relocation; must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on 4.0 scale. KFC REACH Educational Grant Program Discipline: Award: 2,000 - $2,500 Requirements: Must be working at KFC as a team member or shift supervisor. Winners are selected from a competitive application process and may reapply each year. Application opens February 1 and ends on March 17, 2016. National Peace Essay Contest Discipline: General Award: 1st place - $10,000, 2nd place - $5,000, 3rd place - $2,500 (national winners) $1,000 (state winner) Requirements: Open to students in grades 9-12, write essay on " Choose two cases from the past twenty years of countries in transition from war to peace, one successful and the other unsuccessful. American Institute of Chemical Engineers- Central Carolinas Section: Discipline: Engineering Award: Two $500 scholarships Requirements: • High School senior intending to major in Engineering or other technical major in college. State Employees Credit Union - People Helping People Scholarship Discipline: General Award: $10,000 ($1,250 per sem. for 8 semesters) Requirements: Must have 2.5 GPA; must have acceptance and attend one of the 16 UNC System Universities; must be a US citizen and eligible for in-state tuition; must attend a traditional public high school; preference will be given to public sector employees and families who work in local Gov. agencies. Students planning to attend a community college should contact that college for a separate application.
