Escaping Slavery
Hey darkie, do you want to escape slavery? Are you tired of constant flogging from overseers? Well, look north to Canada, a place where you can live a free life and escape the bonds of the peculiar institution. Once you reach the Ohio River, the boundary of the Black Belt, all you need is to cross, and you will find many men, both black and white, willing to help you on your journey to Canada by means of the Underground Railroad.
You will stop at the cities of Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland before crossing into Canada.
The solution is not to fight, like Denmark Vesey and Nat Turner, but to silently escape.
Some tips for the road:
- Follow the North Star, the brightest star in the sky, or follow the direction the birds fly, for that is the way to freedom.
- If you are being chased by dogs or slave catchers, go into a river, because dogs can't get your scent in the water.
- If you find a house with a candlelight in the window, then you are safe to cross the Ohio River.
