What's Buzzing at the Heights
Week 12: November 16-20, 2020
Message from the Principal
Dear Hornet Families,
We had another wonderful week at the Heights. I want to thank each of you for your continued support in helping our scholars meet their academic goals. We are getting better at arriving to class on time and staying engaged throughout the day. Thank you for the extra effort. We appreciate each of you!
Career Week.
This week, we will be learning about Careers and their impact of our society. We will have dress up days and information for the children on various careers. We hope that you will join the fun and let's help our children identify a profession they wish to pursue in the future!
Framework to Return to School.
#TeamSISD will follow the Region 19 School Systems COVID-19 On Campus Attendance Plan, which was developed following Socorro ISD’s framework for utilizing data to guide our Back to School Safely transition. We will provide additional details as specifics are finalized. https://www.esc19.net/Page/1564
For now, as we follow this framework, we must be under 20% hospitalization rate for the city's health to allow us to return to face to face instruction. Until that date, we will be dedicated to helping each child reach their academic goals.
Attendance.
We will continue to be in contact this week for missing notes to absences. We will hold phone conferences or TEAMS meetings to review your child's absences if they are greater than 10.
PLEASE help us and continue to send in their doctor’s notes and absence notes to the following email address.
Reporting Absences:
attendancehorizonheights@sisd.net
All notes should include the following:
- Date
- Students First and Last Name
- Student ID
- Grade
- Teacher’s Name
- Reason for the absence
If they have a doctor’s note, it must be included in the email as an attachment.

Warning Letters for Attendance.
I will continue to make contact with all families that have absences. As district protocol, we issue warning letters at 5, 10 and 15 absences. The goal is to collaborate and have parents submit the notes/justifications for the absences. I will explain the 90% rule for attendance and how it affects your children. At 18 absences, your child is at Loss of Credit and we need to work together to ensure they don't lose credit for the year. As we talk, I will explain the process and ask that you please help submit ALL notes for any absence that your child has.
Lexia.
As your children work on Lexia daily, we will now switch our focus to the number of UNITS completed. For every 5 minutes of work, children should earn 1 unit. Each day, our scholars should earn 5 units. They should be working independently. At the end of the week, scholars should have 25 units. Please help us move your child forward.
Wellness.
TeamSISD is working in collaboration with the city to contact trace each COVID case. If your child tests positive, please complete the wellness form on eSwipe. Nurse Ana Gonzales will be contacting you for details. Know that we are keeping each of you in our thoughts as so many of us as affected by COVID.

Small Group Support.
We will be using our MP1 data to tier our students and offer small group support. Some small group support will be offered during the scholar's math and reading time. Teachers will be contacting you this week to offer an additional time slot from 2:45 PM to 3:30 PM on Mondays through Thursdays. Please work with the teachers to help us support your child.
Thanksgiving Break.
As we complete Week 12, we will have one week off for Thanksgiving Break. With this pandemic at hand, I urge you to take every precaution as you continue to protect your family from this virus. As you count your blessing, think of our community and those in need of positive thoughts! May you each enjoy your families and stay safe!
We are here to help our children continue on their academic journey!
Let's make Week 12 an EXCELLENT week of learning.
Together, we are BETTER!
Respectfully,
Jenifer Hansen
