Pinehill School Newsletter

Message from our Principal
Kia ora tatou, Mālō e lele, Ann yeong haseyo, Ni hao, Dzień dobry
Since the last newsletter I have had the privilege of visiting each class throughout the school. My pop in visits have given me a snapshot of teaching and learning as well as an opportunity to check in with our students and their start to Term 2. I’ve been delighted to see how focused and enthusiastic our students are and their engagement in learning continues to be evident throughout the school.
We welcomed back Jodie Oh this week, who is now known as Mrs Kim. Jodie’s wedding was last week and the photos Jodie has shared with the staff of her special day are just stunning. Congratulations Mrs Kim.
This week is ‘Dis Week’ at Pinehill School. We have been focussing on finding things in our day to be grateful for. It’s a way to ‘up the positivity’ in our daily lives. My ‘Dis’ moments have been plentiful so far this week and include…
Starting my day with an early morning run. Tuesday morning run in the drizzly rain has been my favourite so far. Very refreshing. ‘Dis’
Layby duty after school on Monday in the sunshine talking to our gorgeous students while they wait for parents to pick them up. I have particularly enjoyed hearing how the children spoiled their mums for Mothers Day on Sunday. ‘Dis’
Morning tea time in one staff room (not four like last term), coming together as a staff to enjoy coffee, morning tea, stories and laughter. ‘Dis’
Our parent helpers. It’s wonderful to have parent helpers back in the school. A particular big ‘Shout out’ to our parents doing a road patrol duty. I’ve loved seeing you each day. This helps us immensely. ‘Dis’
Classroom visits. I have particularly enjoyed the students sharing how the sentence trains work and how it has made a difference to their writing. I love how proud they are of their writing. ‘Dis’
Assembly in the hall on Tuesday (not on zoom)! Being treated to R14’s learning sharing, certificate awarding, singing inside again! ‘Dis’
Our motivated, enthusiastic and committed teachers, staff, students contributing to Pinehill being the amazing place it is. ‘Dis’
Our children have been spending time acknowledging their ‘Dis’ moments. Ask them to share some of these with you. I challenge you to share ‘Dis’ moments as a family at home. Speaking from experience, it is the best dinner table conversation. Always surprises me what my own two teenagers appreciate and share. ‘Dis’
Strategic Planning
Each school is required to have a strategic plan. This is a key planning document which sets out the school’s objectives and targets. The purpose of a strategic plan is to establish the vision, aims, objectives, directions and the targets of the Board/school that will give effect to the Government’s National Education Guidelines and the Board’s priorities.
Why do schools have a strategic plan?
To…
Strive for continuous improvement and to maximise the success of each student
Have a strong vision for the future
Use community consultation response, data and research to analyse our strengths and areas for improvement
Plan and set targets for the success of all students
Account for our impact on student outcomes through regular reporting
Strategic Planning Thank you!
My sincere thanks and appreciation to our staff, students and families for your valuable input into our community consultation last year which formed the beginning of our Strategic Plan drafting process. The senior Leadership team and the Board of Trustees worked alongside The Education group in collating the consultation documentation and putting together our Strategic Plan for 2022-2024. The strategic plan is our key planning document and a living document which we will continue to monitor, track progress in our three big goal areas and update.
It is with great excitement, I share with you Pinehill School’s Strategic Plan for 2022-2024. Please see attached.
Our strategic vision has also in the last week been placed around the school in flash signage. You will see the Strategic Vision as you enter the office, both out in the front garden as well as in the office foyer area. Thank you for all being a part of this. We look forward to the mahi ahead and what we can achieve together.
Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini
Success is not the work of one, but the work of many.
Ngā mihi nui,
Carla Veldman, Principal
“Dis!” Week is here!
Did you see the sunrise this morning? “Dis!”
You are waiting at an intersection and someone lets you into the stream of traffic … “Dis!”
You pop a segment of mandarin into your mouth and the juiciness is sweet and amazing … “Dis!”
Collecting these little “Dis!” moments in your day, is what it’s all about.
Part of The Resilience Project is building the capacity in our tamariki, our Pinehill staff and our Pinehill whanau for noticing and acknowledging things in our day to be grateful for. It’s a way to ‘up the positivity’ in our daily lives.
This week, all of our classes and staff are spending time each day collecting our “Dis!” moments and sharing them in different ways. It would be lovely if parents could ask their tamariki about their “Dis!” moments and maybe share a few of their own.
Happy “Dis!” Week, everyone.
KEEPING OURSELVES SAFE
Walking to School Week / Te wiki o te hikoi ki te kura
However, students who use the drop-off zone will not earn house points. So, if you are driving your children to school, please try dropping them off somewhere other than the drop-off zone so that they can participate.
They will be met close to the gates by House Leaders who will give them stickers to add to their house chart. Walking to school is a great way for students to get fit, talk with their friends and earn points for their houses. It will also free up the streets around the school by taking some cars off the road which will improve the environment for all of our regular walkers.
PINK SHIRT DAY Friday 20th May 2022 - GOLD COIN DONATION
Join us on Friday 20 May, 2022 as we Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying!
Celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007. In Aotearoa, Pink Shirt Day works to create schools, workplaces, communities and whānau where everyone feels safe, valued and respected. We will be holding a mufti day on Friday 20th May. Children can come to school wearing something pink as part of their outfit. This could be a pink shirt, pink hair tie, pink skirt, pink hat, pink socks or anything else you can think of.
CROSS COUNTRY - MONDAY 23rd MAY
On Monday 23rd May we will be having our annual cross country event on the main field (savaday is the 24th). Parents are welcome to come and support their children during this event. Due to the changeable weather, and that this is a sporting event, we ask that students wear appropriate clothing (House colours are being encouraged), and running shoes for the event (shoes are optional for Y3-6). Children must change back into their school uniforms after all races have been completed.
